Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Okay. I'm entering a reverb rabbit hole. I think I'm over my Erica Nightverb and might flip it for something new. Unfortunately, I can't figure out where I want to go. I have the OTO BAM which is pretty darn good. I also have an Empress Reverb which was my first expensive ambient effect. I'm looking for something that I can't put my finger on. I'm not sure if I want something like a Meris that covers a ton of ground, or something like a Strymon Cloudburst that just does one ambient thing. I've been looking at the Nucleo, but they are hard to find. The SurfyBear spring reverb has a great sound, but I'm not sure it's going to have enough range. The Vongon Ultrasheer has my interest, but I'd like something with midi or expression control if possible. The Elektron reverb in my Digitone II is nice, so the Analog Heat +FX might be interesting, but like the SurfyBear, I don't think the Digitone reverb is ambient enough.

Should I be looking into the Strymon, Eventide, Meris world of top shelf options? Is something like the Death By Audio Rooms or Walrus Slöer worth a look?

I think I want real time knob turning playability. I'd also like something that can have big pad-like sounds that don't get impenetrably dense (I like the Vongon for this). I like the reverb on my old Dreadbox NYX v1 but it is mono. I don't think Crazy Tube Circuits is making the same reverb which was their old Splash pedal. Hit me with your favorites.
h90?

Always wanted to try a meris.

I’m currently neck deep in the fractal and Eventide offerings.

As far as reverbs in the conventional sense like plate and huge hall (churches and caves), with some pitch/shimmer/crystals, the fractal stuff is hard to beat having deeply editable parameters which can also be attached to expression pedals and switches for real time modulating.

For deep pad reverbs, things you play delays into and feel morph and react, Eventide blackhole keeps getting more and more interesting to me.

Admittedly, the h90 is less than a month old for me, and I’m only just figuring out how to get my favorite big hall sounds from the fractal on the h90. Sp2016, for example, is less immediately apparent than using black hole for big space reverb, imo.

I've got a Meris Mercury7 and an old school H9. That, and the Walrus Sloer and I got it all covered. Blackhole is my desert island reverb.

Did a tv show on Cambridge Community TV (Mass.) this weekend, got some great video out of it. It was my first gig where I brought out the fretless with the big board, as well as way too many synths. I really gotta get over this thing where I bring my studio setup to a 25 minute set, it's stupid. But I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

This is amazing! I used to live in the Boston area, so a geographical empathy too...

Thanks. I tell ya, I would not even be doing live stuff were it not for the supportive and generous environment of the Boston synth scene. I have had so many doors open up for me in the last year and a half. It sucks that it's about a three hour drive for me, but the synth scene in Vermont is very small, a bit insular and very modular heavy, so I haven't really been able to crack it. There's just not the critical mass needed up in Burlington to have event-like shows with high production values that are well-attended. I've ended up with so much professionally-shot footage from some of these gigs, which certainly helps with promo.

I also think I go over well because there's a lot of heavy stuff in the scene down there... lots of hard techno, industrial and noise, and a lot of modular. They don't get too many people doing cinematic/dark ambient or even people playing keys so I think it goes over very well. It's novel, I guess. But I'll take it!

congrats

as someone who used to take a ton of gear to gig (more gear than sense), i can feel that pain. on the other hand, when you get a chance to do a live tv thing, it seems worth it, no?

also, nice t-shirt.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Gonna get some pro video out of it, so why not go all in? But this is a larger problem I have. For example, I used the same sound on my Hydra for 3 pieces in that show. I should have just found some similar VSTi and gone that route. I have the Minifreak VSTi, so I don't really need to bring that. I've got three really good shows coming up in late summer/fall, and I need to get a handle on this. There's more to keep track of, more to go wrong, etc.

Yeah, that's my Transponder shirt, a Berlin School duo out of LA on Synphaera records that I'm really into.

i’m actually gonna take some different synths to different gigs over the next few months. the thing i’m starting to do with the hydra desktop is set up macros that can send lfo stuff out the cv outputs so i can control things like the spotykach and strega on the fly. i think it’s gonna be pretty central to what i do. of course, things change, so who knows…

I think if I were inclined to go for a pricey reverb pedal, Solis Ventus would be the first one I looked at.

The one I have that I'm doubting now is Slöer. It sounds gorgeous but I feel like the settings almost don't matter, except modulation depth/speed But I still use it anyway 🤷

I'm growing more fond of OBNE Darkstar Stereo than I used to be, just for weird textures. Still I do most of my reverb in the DAW.

Superbooth passed me by, woke up some curiosity about a few things but the only one I really have an eye on is Xaoc Budapeszt (dual stereo comb/allpass filter). I want to hear more demos of it. Not going to buy one in 2026 if it happens to come out this year, but I'm thinking about how I might make room for one for next year.

I'm coming around on this Erica Xeno Drive. Around the 15:00 this demo shows some less extreme bass examples that get into more synth-like sounds than screaming resonant gain and folding. I think some of the envelope following sounds could make for evolving textures into a good reverb/delay.

...also, there was a new Nucleo on Reverb recently but I hesitated and it sold before I could get back to it.

i haven’t tried it but there seem to also be good reviews on the hotone verbera in the guitar circles.

I haven’t gotten a taste of convolution reverb in general but seems to be the next avenue aside from recreating famous 80s rack unit algos or things like the Placeholder bbd reverb.
