Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

DAW users looking for some ambient elements to work with should peek at this:

Haunted Spaces is a Kontakt instrument. It is pretty impressive. I just bought it on sale for under $100. Full price is $180.

I'm just digging in, and it seems like it is going to be a useful tool. The library of sounds is pretty big. It is probably a bit of a learning curve if you aren't familiar with software synths.

This is fun.

In the next day or so, I'll be going to Perfect Circuit

I had a meh experience there the first time I went, but I'm willing to give them a second chance. They have quite the selection of pedals and effects available to demo.

Watched a lot of their demos on YouTube. Always wanted to visit that place!

I have to admit, I had a much better experience with my recent visit than I did with my visit a few months ago. The staff was exceptionally helpful. They couldn’t answer all my questions because they don’t know absolutely everything, but they were able to make some good, educated guesses and suggestions. My only disappointment was getting dinged with a restocking fee for the returns that I had. In retrospect, it wasn’t that bad considering I was able to take home a few pieces of gear, play, and then return them (I know there are plenty of bigger shops with no restocking fees).

Experience at the store aside, I’m really happy with this reverb pedal. The Empress is exceptional. I was looking for a unit that would allow me to play it in real time by adjusting controls, and I got exactly what I wanted with this pedal. The fact that it has mix, output level, and equalization controls makes it a huge winner in my book. I don’t know how much I’ll use the preset functionality, but it is nice to have it available.

I hope everyone is doing well and glad to see the thread is still going strong! I stumbled across this little box and damn it looks interesting (http://www.landscape.fm/stereofield). Anyone ever use it?

Unfortunately (for my bank acct) I am starting to gas for an analog poly synth. Have really been eyeing the DSI Prophet Rev2 desktop but have yet to pull the trigger on anything as I am afraid this might be a very deep rabbit hole to go down.

Also just finished this ambient jam. All recorded into Aurio Pro on the ipad and made up of a mangled field recording, a couple of mangled bass notes and a little heavily processed Animoog. Hope you enjoy. Any and all comments, thoughts, criticisms are welcomed.

Nice!
My only criticism is that there is a pretty regular upper register pitch that gets me right in a range I don't like. It is like a metallic pipe sound (flute-like) that has a vibrato wobble on it. If it were me, I'd EQ that down/out, or find a way to make it evolve or fade out more often. I find it distracting, and I've created something very similar in pieces I've worked on, more than once.
Otherwise, I enjoyed it :)

So far, my new Empress Reverb has been wonderful. My only complaint is that I don't quite have the preset scroll/bank thing figured out yet. Otherwise, it is a wonderful device (as it should be for the price tag). I'll try to record something soon.

@dukeorock did you ever get the Elektron Octatrak? I've been looking at a Dreadbox Medusa, but the demos haven't impressed me, and I noticed the Octatrak is about the same price, and has a bunch of features that would be fun to play around with. Can't let cash just sit in the bank ;)

I never did get one...yet. I fear the structure may be a bit much for my tiny brain to process. A buddy has one and they are crazy versatile though. Seriously cool machines, depending on what you want to do. I’m kinda with you on the Medusa. I want to love it, but I’ve yet to hear anything that trips my trigger. Even more so with the Synthstrom Deluge. Looks cool as all get out, and versatile, but I just don’t love the synth part. I feel like I’ve heard those sounds enough for one lifetime. The box I’m currently most interested in is the Gotharman LD3. Similar utility as an Octatrack, but something about its functionality makes me feel like it could be really fun to use. For now, my Digitakt is still king, despite a few limitations. It’s just crazy fun and inspiring to make unexpected textures along the writing process.
Not sure if you ever visit the muffwiggler forum, but there’s a great thread on Gotharman products. The Little Deformer 3 being my favorite

I got the Bank setting of presets on the Empress figured out tonight. I don’t know why it was so challenging for me to understand it at first. Now that I know what I’m doing, I can’t imagine a simpler way of doing it.

That seems to be the verb of choice for synths...I’m still on the fence on a couple things, like normal :)
