Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

What's that knob do? ...No, the other one, to the left and further up from the switch thingy, not far from the corner of the unit with the digital metering near the back... what happens when you turn that knob?

As a professional audio engineer, the most common question I get from folks wandering by FOH when I'm mixing live sound is "Do you really know what all of those knobs do?" Seriously, I've probably gotten that question at least once a week for the last ~30 years.

I once pointed to some completely undifferentiated red knob in a sea of red knobs and said "That one right there... I have no idea what that one does."

That was way more gratifying than my usual response, which is it to smile wryly and say "Yeah, that's my job."

Spend two days so far trying to learn this damn Elektron Octatrack MK2. It’s a seriously complex machine for me. It does do a lot of great tricks. Did some live looping in the machine, which took forever to figure out just for this basic, kinda dancey jam. Next up will be an attempt at something more ambient/textural. But this is a start, at least

Nice! Keep going.

Just ordered the GFI Specular Tempus.
Just trying to keep up with monster :)

If this keeps up we’ll be broke in no time.

The Tempus was tempting. The dual engine of the Empress was the deciding factor for me. I’ve got a few ideas to experiment and implement.

The stereo Reverb seems to work well with my home PA. Hoping for similar results live.

Did a dark ambient sort of thing on my new Octatrack MK2. Played my bass into the machine and started hacking away. The actual piece will be different, but I slowed it down to 36bpm so I could make loops and resample into the machine. This jam was performed on the Octatrack and recorded straight into Logic in stereo with no tomfoolery after the fact :)

Nice!

Working up my third jam since getting this Elektron Octatrack. I gotta say, it’s getting me closer to what’s been in my head all this time with that ‘SingleSource’ bass only thing. Originally, I tried a looper pedal, which ‘worked,’ but I found myself throwing it in to Logic and adding stuff to make it interesting enough. The Octatrack allows for live looping, live sampling, resampling, sub mixing other gear...all kinds of stuff. I’ll most likely be selling my looper now and upping my pedal game :)
If you’re wanting to do solo performances that are involved, textured etc., I can’t recommend this machine highly enough. The only caveat is the learning curve borders on nightmarish, at least for me!

Grabbed a new interface today. Sounds good. Got the NI Komplete Audio 6. Tried running the Ric into the Empress stereo reverb. I even have dress strings on. Trying to develop an idea worth recording to share. I keep wanting to do Sisters of Mercy with the modulated verb ;)

I really want to hear that!

That sounds awesome.

You've got to let me know next time you’re going to be in Los Angeles, so we can schedule performing something together. I want to see this in action.

I’d love to at some point! Right now, it just looks like some idiot messing everything up over and over again :)

Maybe this week. I’m now realizing I can downsize my road rig by using this interface to handle my audio and midi needs. I previously had. 2i2, so I couldn’t handle all the instrument-in lines.

The sound is much clearer and brighter than the Mackie mixer I was running through. For this performance I want a dark, almost muddy sound, so now I’m working on how to get that crisp, new vibrant sound to dull down a notch.

I’ve only got a few days before I hit the road. I’m hoping to find any bugs or glitches before I go.
