Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

oh, man, if he already has a mixer and a looper (or several) I'd think about having all his instruments running straight into the mixer's input channels, then having the mixer's Aux Send(s) feeding the input to the looper(s) ...and then bringing the looper output(s) back into the mixer via more regular input channel. That way any source can go to any looper -- individually or in combinations -- and any looper can go into any other looper. Or into itself.

I've been doing this exact thing and have been getting a little bit of phasing oddness of having my signal coming through 2 channels after one passes through the looper via aux send and is then the input on another channel. If I play with the mix I can get it to work out, but the settings are weird to me. I'm using an old digi002 board in standalone mode.

Indeed, it would greatly simplify the patch of the looper set up and add multiple output choices. Not to mention easily adjusting the mix.

But this rises the issue ,does the L-R ins on the RC50 accept line level impedance frm the mixer ??

My 2 cents.

I’m sooooo not plugging any looper today.
:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

It's not as versatile as it could be, with any input jack being configurable for any sound source, but there is an AUX stereo jack for things like backing tracks, and since AUX can be recorded to any of the three phrases (individual channels but without dedicated inputs), nothing stops me from taking a mixer's stereo out into the AUX jack.

I don't really have the theoretical knowledge needed to say for sure if this actually means the AUX input could handle the line level signal from a mixer, but here's a clue from the manual:

Only issue I can see for now is:

Check if the delay pedal will accept mic level impedance.
How are you going to plug the mic into the pedal?
Xlr to 1/4 adapter ???

You're right, that would probably have to be worked around by connecting the mic to a small mixer with an FX loop.

How will you turn off the mic once the loop is made si any sounds don't bleed into the mix??

Muting it on said mixer.

I have no clue what the retracer is but check if the fx loop is line or instrument level....high or low Z impedance.

It's a very versatile digital delay from EBS, which I highly recommend. Use it with my fretless and my EUB all the time.

I'm also assuming you can set individual gain levels for the L-R inputs of the rc50.
If so....you can set levels for all three signal chains in order to have an appropriate blend and balance to build up loops.

I'm not entirely sure that is possible.

Is this the aux input level chart for the rc50?

If so, then yes it is a line level input impedance. You can plug the out from a mixer into it no problem.

I think now you should go plug that thing in a try stuff out. You won't damage anything with miss matched levels. Unless you crank everything to the spinal tap 11 ;)

Give us some feedback and feel free to askany questions if any issues arise.

Cheers buddy.

Yes, it's the input level chart for all input channels on the RC-50. Among them AUX.

Thanks, you have been most helpful.

Am I right in assuming this would require a mixer where you can choose for each channel where the sound should go – AUX or MAIN? Then I will have to get one of those. Which is great, I needed some kind of incentive to update my mixer. Now I'm running two small ones in series, which really isn't optimal. And they don't have AUX switches on individual channels.

For most mixers with a dedicated Aux bus or two (or eight, or...) it's not an either/or choice...which is the appeal of the configuration I suggested: You can route signal from each channel to the Main outputs and any of the Aux outputs simultaneously and in varying amounts.

OK, I might have misunderstood your suggestion a bit. Anyway, now I have a 10 channel mixer with alternative outs and mute buttons on each channel for the main mix. It's going to be great.

OK, first test drive with the new mixer:

Guitar –> Enzo –> mixer
Bass –> Microbass II with Retracer delay in FX loop –> mixer
Mic –> mixer
Eventide H9 running Blackhole on one AUX bus into one mono channel on the mixer
Boss RC-50 on the other AUX bus into stereo channel on the mixer

It sounds great, I have two extra channels for additional sound sources (or more if I connect another mixer).

Thanks a bunch for your advice!

At some point you might consider one of these handy patch bay devices.

It allows you to swap which effects you use on which instruments with minimal rerouting of your cables. It’s a handy utility if you have a collection of effects pedals

interesting. i feel like you’ve gotten a lot of great results.

and i don’t even know what “mastered” means. can you truly master anything?

Very true! I’ve had a blast with mine and it’s just utterly unique. There’s so many ways you can use it and it’s tempting to try to learn all those ways immediately, but it’ll drive you crazy trying. Just too much. I got very frustrated trying to use it as a looper. But there’s a way to set up the sampler to kind of act like a looper. I tried learning the Arranger (song) mode, which is neat, but really, I don’t want to use a song mode. I like memorizing/performing my moves, scenes, etc because I like the way that feels better.
Basically, the Octatrack does a whole lot of different things, but I just tend to focus on 3-5 of those things, so I don’t go insane.

Re: mastering something.

IMO,IME the more you learn about anything, the more you realize how little you actually know.

And that :)

Kinda interesting synth. Wavefolding with filter in a desktop module. The demo video says nobody has done it before, but I’m doubting that. My Medusa has FM and a filter.

ok I may have this wrong but... does that mean you pay 1300 euros to kickstart and place yourself in the “I want list”... and don’t even “buy it” for it’s unknown price???

That page is a.cluster #$$&.
How about a few clear and concise lines of text.

Explain what you get for the $$.

And one good demo vid.
Major presentation fail.
