Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Hey all,

My band The Sound of Rescue just released a new album Tuesday. It would mean a lot if you checked it out and shared it if you like it!

On this one I really went to town with tons of delay and reverb on top of the Tall Font Russian...big bassy walls of sound throughout.

This is badass, love it!

Subbed. There is some great stuff going on here.

Question: I'm looking at getting a reverb to add to my board, but since it will likely be for my experimentation, and not likely a full-time resident (don't see using it with the band) - I wasn't looking to spend a bunch of cash.

There is a T-rex Tonebug and also a Digiverb for sale locally, but the tonebug is a few bucks less.

I'm leaning towards the Digiverb for the reverse (sounds like fun to noodle with), but I have seen some bad reviews on it.

Any suggestions on which would be better?

UPS Left a present on my doorstep today....

So - what's a good start for settings? Signal Chain will likely be:

Wah>OCD>Tall Font Russian>Chorus>Phaser>Flanger>Tremolo>Delay>Digiverb>Loop Station

- unless someone has a better suggestion...

I'd personally put the looper earlier in the chain. If you use reverb or delay into a looper, you'll have a skip/jump in the swells/feedback sounds when the loop starts over.

Plus, if you put it before filters and the like, you can "throw down" the bass and fiddle with the delays and feedback and make ears bleed while the loop does it's thaang

That's kinda what I was thinking with it at the end: I could have a (relatively) unprocessed bass track, and then kick on various fx over the groove.

Here's a couple i just posted on the looping thread. The first one I made this morning. The second I just found on my computer, I forgot I recorded it.

The first one is made with the following:

Fender American Jazz Bass Deluxe V

3leaf Wonderlove
Dunlop Crybaby Bass Wah
Hardwire CM-2 Tube Overdrive
Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor
Boss GEB-7 Bass EQ
MIJ Boss BF-2 Flanger
Dr. Scientist Tremolessence
Eventide Timefactor
Boss RC-300 Loop Station

Audacity

I'm not sure what I used on the second one.

Oh my gosh this thread is SO COOL. I've been getting into ambient and textural with my bass lately kinda on my own with no direction, so this is just fantastic. I grew up listening to ambient and ambient techno (Namlook, Autechre, Aphex Twin, BOC, muziq, Squarepusher, etc.) so exploring sonic textures with my bass has been lots of fun. I am also an ambient techno DJ so I've been working on playing on top of minimal beats on my turntables. :ninja:

Does or did anyone listen to the FAX series, em:t releases, or the Instinct Ambient releases from the mid-90s? WARP is probably popular, but what about RePhLeX RECORDS?

Anyway, I'm rebuilding my board in this direction and I hope I can post it here and get some input. I'm still kinda in the BIG IDEAS that don't always pan out stage. But I'm starting to figure out what works with what and I have some fun pedals on the way. Awesome stuff in this thread so far! :)

Edit: I just looked and my Xerograph Deluxe is out for delivery...so YAY  :hyper:
