couldn’t hear #3 over static.
They took a break and came back later, with the volume down a bit, with I Want Candy and Sweet Caroline, then Journey. The band was good but that set list was a nightmare. If We Are Family had started I’d have thought it was a wedding.

I get that Prince has fans and is highly regarded by many, but not in my house. I won’t even argue my dislike for his music anymore because neither side will walk away convinced nor satisfied.

I didn't realize in your first post it was a band. I never was able to penetrate the attraction of Prince myself. Maybe because I lived through it and just didn't get it to start with? 1999 was pretty cool but never got into anything else even though I tried. I even had a bootleg CD of the Black Album - didn't do anything for me. But that says more about me than it does about Prince...

I never was able to penetrate the attraction of Prince myself.

To clarify: I have immense respect for Prince, but there are really only a small handful of his tunes that I genuinely enjoy. "1999" just happens to be one of those, hence my earlier comment about attending the backyard barbeque. For the record, "Head" and "Controversy" are the remaining two that immediately come to mind. There are probably one or two more. Definitely nothing from the latter half of his career...or at least, none that I've heard.

I think the thing that mostly prevents me from enjoying him more is that his funk [sic] seems so determined to achieve funkiness while avoiding any of the clichéd archetypes of funk music that it ultimately ceases to be funky per se, and simply manages to be idiosyncratic Prince music. It's still danceable, still gets yer booty moving, make ya wanna holler throw up yer hands blah-blah-blah...but it's achieved by these odd constructions that sound like they're going out of their way to not emulate any of the proto-ancestral funk.

Yup - here's a pic - mixer-wise it's nothing special - I was kind of confused at first - I was expecting 1/4" outs, but the only out is the headphone out, no controls for each channel. The advantage is that it also will power three units with just one wall-wart. Plus it comes with the frame/cable holder, some patch cables (not quite long enough to connect to outboard gear, that's why the MAQ in the video below is turned sideways), a manual about working with both the DFAM & Subharmonicon, dice, cardboard cutouts, etc. Here's the mixer:

And I finally got the Doepfer MAQ16/3 to play with the DFAM! Had to figure out gate (which the MAQ also puts out) The sequence is just the way the knobs happened to be set. Had to RTFM for multiple units (something I've gotten good at) and use my noggin a little bit:



I know that in addition to being the clock, the MAQ is affecting the notes of the DFAM but not sure yet how. That's the next experiment I guess. I also realized that the MAQ & DFAM aren't starting on the same note - gotta work on that too, but I think it was just carelessness this time around...

So that's a 4 channel mixer, or 2 stereo channels? Looking at that photo.

Seems kind of cool, wonder if Moog sells those separately. I currently have two Mother 32's in a dual rack and having a common power supply and audio out would make it a whole lot more portable.

That Sub/DFAM bundle would go great alongside my dual M32 setup too, would make a complete Moog semimodular setup...[punches self in face EXERCISE SELF CONTROL! SELF CONTROL!]

As for Prince I'll say this. As a giant Rush fan, over the years I've heard people tell me they respected the band's talent and musicianship but didn't care for the music itself. I felt pretty much the same about Prince. Monster musician whose style of pop never really connected with me. But I get why people love it and that's cool. We all like what we like.

On those occasions when Prince would just bust out and rock the guitar I loved him. The George Harrison tribute comes to mind. I think the world would be a better place had he stuck with us a bit longer.

There are switches on the back so it can be set as 4 mono or 2 stereo (which I haven't totally wrapped my head around yet, since I have very few stereo things - just an Akai MINIAK which maybe I should experiment with). Maybe even 2 mono + 1 stereo?

Apparently they may be working on putting it out separately but as of now can only be had when purchasing one of the bundles. But to help prevent you from doing it, if you did get a bundle it would still only power 3 units, even though you could mix all 4 together. And it's a very rudimentary mixer.

Also, while I’m here: I really enjoyed the philosophical turn about gear acquisition. For me, it’s a mix of a search for inspiration, admiring some stuff as works of art or creativity in their own right, and chasing particular sounds and functions that I know I want. The last is in some ways the most “artistically valid” (scarequotes) but honestly, the least satisfying as a process. Usually leads to troubleshooting hell or a lot of churn that’s less fun. The great reverb hunt was a good Covid activity, though. I’m having more thoughts on this stuff, but I’m on vacation and will let them simmer.
