Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Okay, I doubt this is my entry into being a Youtuber (if it is, I have a lot to learn), but here's the tutorial.

I originally said I had fun doing this last night, even though I redid it. Yeah, well after godless-knows-how-many takes I did into the wee hours of the morning, I wanna take that back. I don't know how many times I'd go through the pedal run through, think I nailed it, only to realize I forgot something.

But it did give me a good idea of what I need to do next (namely, write an f-ing script, or at least have more detail in my notes than a grocery list). I also was able to learn a lot about how to use Davinci, which is an amazing video editor. This will come in handy when I want to make videos for my upcoming album releases.

If I do get any positive response to this, I will likely make some more. Don't make me do that. Constuctive criticism welcome.

I'm looking forward to watching this when I get home from the office today!

vinyl records were great when you had a ritual of listening: read the liner notes, turn the record over (i’m also of the age when we used the covers roll certain items).

not great for easy access to a number of situations.


cd covers are almost impossible to read the notes on, but are more portable (if that’s your thing).

i was adamantly *against* the cd until is listened to a recording of a mahler symphony with the score in hand and could actually hear the really soft low notes that i always saw in the scores, hut never heard in vinyl.

in any event, my og cd post was more about the cd making a small resurgence.

I have a couple thousand CDs and my dad just gave me his entire classical CD collection a few months ago.
Easily one thousand to 1500 cds. Including all Bach box set of 155cds

This was fantastic. My only constructive criticism is the voiceover was very quiet and could've benefited from one of those pop filter thingys. Really awesome overall though.

Also you mentioned your cabs...so you use two powered QSC cabs and a sub? What's your preamp situation?

At this point, my favorite medium would be 24-bit lossless files. Sounds great, and easy to deal with. My days of physical media are behind.

I don’t buy much physical media either. I don’t feel snobbish about format. I was at the Memphis Listening Lab awhile back. Listening to great recordings on an insane system. Maybe it’s romanticism, but I feel a sense of ‘3D,’ depth, or whatever you want to call it on great vinyl masters. I won’t be investing in it, but I appreciate what I feel from it.

I haven't been posting, but I've been trying to keep up! For now, will just report that I'm working on something, and between all my various gear ranging from archaic (2009) to a few years ago, I am somewhat confused and may put of my current project (update I haven't reported here) until tomorrow at the earliest. I think I need to just relax - turned in last semester's grades in today, that was a big stress point, plus my 22 year old cat has had some minor issues and took her to the vet today. Oh yeah, my mailbox is messed up but thanks to the efforts of a good friend is fixed for now.

In the meantime here's a pic of me with the instrument I'm currently working with...

Already been thinking about what to do differently. First off, more vox volume, and I want to be able to talk over certain things so I think I will do some sort of sidechaining. I thought about a pop filter but I was holding the mic in my hand.

Well, technically, I could go straight into the powered speakers without a pre, but I have two Focusrite 18i20's linked with optical, and those would be my pre's. All of my synths go through there, too. Were I to gig out live, I'd prob just go direct to the PA.

I love having the pa setup. Not the most economical, loud as all hell if I need it to be (which, generally, I don't), good for listening and good for jamming. I have the speakers mounted, and this does have me thinking when this pandemic ever ends and if I start doing performances, I might pick up a stereo amp like a Motion Sound or Space Station. Although being able to do a physically wide spread is really nice, for sure.

Yeah, to echo what other say, it's not about snobbery with me either. I think it sounds best and it's convenient - different strokes and all that. If someone loves old cassettes, more power to 'em. I still have an old copy of Tales From Topographic Oceans to roll things on, if the urge strikes.

Best wishes to your cat! (And you too, I suppose ) My eldest is 13 and she's got liver issues that are going to need some sort of invasive procedure to diagnose. Next discussion with the vet will be about which procedure to go with.

That was a decent first run. Nicely done. The video volume was a little low for my AirPods and I got a little buzzing at one point (which might be an issue with my AirPods). Otherwise it cool to hear the individual components and then how they fit together. Looking forward to seeing how this develops for you.

Finally got to watch the video. It's very clear and helpful. My kind of YouTube tutorial--clear, didactic, mellow (appropriate for the music) and no influencer stuff.

I'd recommend a finer breakdown of times on the ToC but really the only other thing you need to deal with is voice. Even a cheap foam screen will help with the popping so you don't need to do stationary mic and pop filter. Another trick: aim it at your forehead or throat (depends on sound which is better). That will get it out of the way of air blasts. Another option would be a lavalier though you have to watch out for clothing sounds. Another option would be to record it live and then overdub a voice over to replace it (like scratch vocals!).

And mix yourself louder relative to the instrumental sounds, and the whole thing was a little quieter than other YouTube videos. Easy enough to fix with a mastering preset on something in your software.

I also got into Davinci last year. Absolutely impressive software for something that's free.

I was lying in bed last night thinking about all of the things I could have done differently. I wasn't multitracking anything, and I think next time I may do that... it was all going straight to the iPhone. So I have more thinking about what to do, I definitely won't do it this way again. Don’t be too hard on yourself. The teaching part of the video was actually good, and that’s the hardest part with tutorials. Maybe it’s because of my day job but that’s the thing I’m least patient with on YouTube.

Yeah @lordradish you got the most important stuff nailed, it's just a matter of polishing some of the edges.
