Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

mostly it’s about a quad setup.
I am looking at those for a fretless Warmoth build, but can’t find any real life reviews.

I whipped together a Warmoth fretless 5-string (EADGC) with one Bartolini MV52CBJD3 quad-coil soapbar (MusicMan form-factor), though not quite in the MusicMan Stingray location; the original mandate was to get the rearmost coil (or coil pairs?) in the 60's Jazz Bass location, but tbh I'm not sure the guy who did the pickup routing completely grok'd what I was asking for. In any case, it's wired up so that the rear coil(s) and the front coil(s) of this pickup are wired as if they're two separate pickups, so the Bartolini NTMB preamp has separate volume controls for the two halves. Blending front and back halves in anything less than 50/50 blend yields some fascinating timbres...all admittedly very subtle shades of the full-on tone, though it really makes me want to build a two pickup version of this bass, with two quad-coil pickups wired up as four separate pickups with both front/rear blend per pickup and overall neck/bridge pickup blend!

Anyhow, that Bart quad-coil MusicMan pickup sounds fantastic. Phat and chewy and punchy and clear without being too bright or zingy. I originally cobbled this bass together just to use up some spare parts I had lying around, but it's been getting more use than my main fretless due to its wonderful tone.

My noise band used to play a drone day celebration for years; unfortunately COVID killed the local scene. It was great fun. Often we'd be set up a small local bar and have us up but also a bunch of spare inputs for anybody else who wanted to show up and join the drone. They could just come up, plug whatever they had in, make some sounds and leave at their leisure.
That sounds awesome. I should do something like that in my backyard to pay my neighbors back for the countless times I've had to hear their crappy music.

A gasoline powered leaf blower at 2 AM is a type of drone.

#ambient!

@ugly_bassplayer i am all about finding an instrument you gel with and then modding it to taste. I probably told the story of my modded fretless precision, but it went in the other direction, then back.

And now…a Canadarm. I finally felt good enough to try setting it up.

Maybe a stupid question but……can the cosmos be used as something else than a “drone ambient” évolutive machine??
Can it “paint” other colors?

@steubig

my feeling is that j bass pickups may not be your thing? (family man notwithstanding)

per carey nordstrand: “j basses are constructed like they sound: tall and skinny. p basses are short and fat.”

the reason i mentioned the quad is that you can get different flavors all in the p bass placement range. i mean, if you’re gonna rout, why go half measures?

You definitely make a good point right there.
This leaves another question, double quad pickup bass?
Dual MM split??

Also you’re getting to know pretty freakin well. Family Man is da shizzle!!!!
With Darryl Jenifer they are mos def some of my top J guys /period

there are a couple of pseudo demos up there. the one with the best player is probably the dan lutz nordstrand sig. though he has a big man, not a big split and it’s in back of the p bass pickup.

bad brains!
