American Standard P vs 1962 American P Reissue

Do you think a pickup swap in the American Standards would give more of a vintage tone, or maybe it's the bridge? Neither?

I think a pickup swap would make a big difference. The original pickups are good too just no that traditional vintage sound. Drop in some Fender Original 62's, Fralins, or something like that and it would change the voice of the bass a bit.

Last question for the experts, If I wanted to put ashtrays on a standard, is it all the same cavity and routing or would I risk drilling the wiring, I know, it's lazy...just wondered if anyone knew before I take the guard off to have a look...

I don't know if it's the same routing or not, but I have a '62 RI tort guard on my 2008 AS, and drilled into the cover screw holes and thumbrest hole. Not a problem.

The US vintage series is the best production bass Fender makes.

Wide 1.75" neck, vintage frets, 7.25 fretboard radius, and nitro finish.

I don't mean to be "that guy" that brings up a virtually dead thread with a question that is kind of dumb, but I'm in a similar predicament in deciding between basses. What I am wondering is how do the finishes compare? Specifically olympic white. I know one is finished with a nitro finish, and the other with a poly finish. I just wonder how ''white'' both basses begin and how time affects their finish as it seems like all of the '62 RI basses I've seen "yellow" a bit faster than the american standards.
