Amp has no line out, direct box?

my cajon player doesn't have an amp, and we've played two shows using an sm57 micing his cajon, straight to the board. he always gets lost in the mix and can never hear himself.

our next show, friday, we decided it might be a good idea to use an extra bass amp I have. It's a trace elliot ah100, but the problem is that there's no line out. We have an XLR -> 1/4in, so we can connect to the amp, but is there a way we can send the cajon to my bass amp, to the board?

There's a "phones" outlet, so I was thinking that I would sent the cajon to my bass amp, and out from the phones outlet to a direct box and then to the board.

But i'm not 100% sure.

any suggestions?


Would it go

cajob mic - > direct box -> pa
(directbox line through) -> amp -> cabinet

or would it go

cajon mic -> amp -> speaker
direct box (direct box line through)-> PA

Mic (XLR to 1/4 adapter)to outboard DI, XLR to board, 1/4 from DI to amp.

you're just trying to rig up a powered monitor here.

the right way is mic to the board, then board's aux out to a regular monitor wedge for the player.

That's strange...the AH100 manual online says there's a line-out available. Is the preamp section a GP7?

If they don't have an extra wedge the best way to go is

Cajon -> DI

DI -> Desk

DI -> link to Bass Amp

Then your player can control his volume from the amp and not affect the board at all. Just make sure he doesn't feed back lol

for a cajon i mic them up with a sennheiser e604 and a MD421...best sound ever. the 421 is an amazing mic if you can afford it, but the 604 is very reasonable price new.

agree with Big Daws the E604 are really good for percussion even though they are designed for guitar amps. the Sm57 is not really a great mic for this application because the Cajon has many differnt sounds going on inside it. Deep bass ,wood slap and snares sizzling. The sm57 if very directional it picks up what is in front of it very good. (hi-hat/snare drum etc... Its not a great mic for wide dispersion pick up - this might be the problem. dont use the bass amp,if any thing pickup a cheap keyboard or bass practice amp then get the proper adapters. But first experiment with a different mic.

either way, as a purely mic'ed instrument the cajon player isn't gonna benefit from a "cajon amp" anymore than the drummer needs a "drum amp" or the sax player needs a "sax amp".

it's monitors that are needed, handled entirely by the mixing board.
