Amp modification

I have an Ampeg head in my rack rig that I use for live shows. The problem is that the XLR direct out only has a -20db pad switch, not a variable line level pot. I haven't looked inside the amp or seen a schematic, but I assume that the pad switch runs the line out signal through a resistor that cuts the output level. Here's my question:

Can I put a potentiometer in line with the direct output (probably in place of the pad switch) to give me more control over my line out signal? I don't want to do anything that would hurt the amp.

You REALLY need the schematic to make any decision. We have no clue if your DI is tube fed, Opamp fed, transformer or buffer.

Mesa does this on several of their amps. Below is a schematic. There are high quality miniature pots (google Bourne) that might fit where the pad switch is. If you don't need a pot, you could also change the pad value to something more workable. That would involve changing one or two resistors.
