Double Bass Amp on a fixed budget

I have about $600 for a new amp. I want to get an acoustic image, but that's way to expensive. Are there any good sounding amps out here for that price?

Look at used ones in the classifieds here. Bass players are notorious for switching gear frequently, you can buy almost new for big discounts.

+1 on the classifieds. Most all of my gear is used.


GK's newest smallest head the MB 200 isn't the most powerful amp on the block but it sounds good and only weighs 2.5 lbs. Pair that head up with the cabinet of your choice and you have a nice amp. It costs $299.00 list

I bought a used SWR Baby Blue II earlier this year and am unbelievably happy with it. I like the sound of the smaller speakers for upright. It responds quickly, which is great with guts. My electric sounds killer through it, too.

It handles 95% of my club gigs on its own. For larger gigs, it has a gorgeous line out that sound guys love. I think it weighs around 45 lbs. I paid $450 for mine. If I had the dough, I'd pick up a second. Here's one on ebay currently:

I've owned an Acoustic Image Contra (with the extension cab); an Ampeg BA115T; a GK MB150S; and GK 400 and 1001 heads with several cabinets -- Carvin 2x10; Bag End 15; SWR 4x8; Acme 2x10.

For me, this SWR combo is the best.....so far.

If you are looking for just a head I'd say checkout www.Carvin.com ...Decent quality and very good sound.
