Ampeg 1970's V4 Cab tests

John, the fella wants $325. I would replace grillcloth, but he said it works great. He used it for guitar.

if the speakers are all good, that's not too bad for a vintage V4 cab. the grill cloth is pretty inexpensive to replace.

How clean vs the SVT at the same volume?

that's hard to describe, but its as clear and clean as the V4b with the two 4x12's at the same volume.

they are ALL guitar cabs, but some have heavier-duty speakers in them. i believe that they came with at least four different types of speakers.

as i mentioned above in my opening post that the light duty ones (the ones with the small round mags and small voice coils) sound good but really shouldn't be used for bass as they tend to fart out and get cloudy at loud volumes.

it's hard to see exactly just how big your magnets are, but they look fairly small. those are Rola speakers, made the 8th week of 1977.

What is Rola? Another site listed this mode number as being Eminence...

its the name of the company that manufactured your speakers. some guitarists really like them.
the 285 prefix is Rola's EIA code.

if all of the speakers have their original cones and work perfectly, you can always sell them for about the same cost for four new bass speakers. they will sound okay for bass, but without a better picture of them, i don't know if they can handle a V4 at high volume with a bass.

it looks the they have their original cones and have small voice coils with mid-sized magnets. they should sound good for bass, but i think that you could blow them if pushed since they look to be about a 40 watt speaker to me.

Hey there,

Another speaker identification question. My V4 cab has CTS speakers in it, and from the front it appears they have large chrome dust caps. From the back, the magnets appear to be large. Does anyone know anything about those speakers?
