i think that your speakers must have been replaced at one time since AFAIK the only V4 cabs with ally dust caps had altec speakers. alot of the CTS speakers with ally caps came in Sunn cabs.

That's interesting, as I've not found much info on my cab with the CTS speakers. I should post some pictures and get the numbers off them sometime.

They seem to make great bass speakers though.

from what i understand, there were 4 different types that i know of:

#1- most common: square mag heavy duty Eminence 8 ohms
#2- small round magnet Eminence made (but EIA labeled Pyle) 32 ohm speakers
#3- four Altec 4417-8C 8ohms
#4- Rola medium round magnets 8 ohms

I bought the cabinet. I am happy with it's sound - but like you said, I probably will need to replace the speakers with something more efficient. So two questions come to mind:

1. What is a fair price to sell my four Rola 12's for?
2. What are some good choices for replacements? Should I go new? Vintage?

I understand that different speakers sound different. Honestly, I love the sound it has now. I like a nice round, punchy tone not too trebly with a slight increase of low mid's.

i really like the Eminence neo 2512 series II's in mine. the cab handles 1000 watts (thermally) so you'd never blow them. and it makes the cab lighter in weight.

i don't think that you would be disappointed at all. IMO,they're a bit tighter and punchier. and in a live band situation, i think that's more desirable.

I am looking into getting these, John. Is there any reason I SHOULD NOT replace the speakers to make the cab 4 Ohm? My Eden head is 400/watts at 4 Ohm and it would be nice to run it full wattage as a backup amp to my V-4.

the cab would still be 8 ohms unless you could find 4 ohm 12" speakers (wired series/parallel) or 16 ohm 12's wired all in parallel.

I'm a bit bummed> Local tech guy says my Rola 12's aren't worth much, but then siad he didn't know what I could sell them for.

So now, after buying my V4 cab for $325 I have to sink in another 400-500 for new speakers. WHat do you think I could get for my Rola's?

Tech guy suggested the Eminence 12A Kappas. I like the idea of the lgihtweight Eminence 2512s....

i think that you'd be happiest with the 2512's. they sound great, are very lightweight and can handle almost anything that you can throw at them. the texas heat speakers are less efficient, and much more suited for guitar. they have way less bass response and a very low xmax rating. with the 2512's you don't have to adjust your head for more bass, which allows a V4 to have alot more headroom.

Gotcha. What about the 12A's? Are there ever any used 2512's available?

200 is about all I got after buying the V4 head and cab... Hook me up? PLEASE!

Beta 12A-2's are pretty nice bass speakers. i have a cab with two of them in it. they have a little less top end than the 2512's, weigh 2 1/2 lbs more each, are a little less efficient, and have slightly less xmax, but still sound really good in a sealed cab.

Looks like the 12-As have free shipping. That's $260, so it's close to my price range. You think I'll be pretty happy with the headroom?

Also, I am wondering if this is something I can do myself .... installing them
