Double Bass Ampeg 210AV

Had a little duo session with a guitar player tonight and he absolutely loved it.

Also thanks to anyone who's contributed to the duo threads, it made it a more productive night for us.

In the meantime here is a little more from the same guy.

My NL210 is more of a natural extension of my bass only louder. The 210av is very mid forward, but in a pretty organic way. I find the get more of that natural sound I have to dial the mids way back. That being said I really think it works to your advantage with a drummer. So I'm finding the cab exceeds my expectations in musical situations where at home by itself if only consider it a decent workable cab.

I to wish we'd hear from some others. The price is low enough that I think some guys will kick the tires.

Form factor is excellent. it's light, 25 lbs or so. Sounds excellent on the bandstand. Doesn't need a lot of power to be heard either. It's not a boutique cabinet. So what.

One year later I have (2) 210AVs and they're wonderful, pairing it with a Jule amp Monique and M700. Pretty much all the stuff pictured on the prior page has been sold off.

I have a stack of the 210AV's as well. I've only gigged with one so far as I've had good FOH support on my gigs lately. I'm a big fan too. After years of spending a ton of coin on all the high priced brands out there, I came to the conclusion that they rarely justify the cost as far as tone is concerned.

They are a back saver as well. Once I get my bass into a gig, I can carry a head, bass cab, and tool box in with the second trip and be done.

I'm thinking of trying one of these 210AV cabinets. I recently sold my TC112 Thunderchild cabinet, and have been using an SWR 2x10 cabinet. Since I have started using an Ischell mic on my bass, I'm finding that the SWR is not giving me the optimal tone, as it is so mid-range heavy, designed for electric bass, and I have to roll off some extreme mids to get it to sound acceptable. I'm regretting selling the TC112 now that I'm using the Ischell, but reading about the 210AV has me thinking that it might be worth trying.

Have any of you 210AV users compared it against an TC112? Also, do you think I will find that its midrange level is more balanced than this SWR 2X10?

I don't have experience with the other cabs but I think the 210AV is pretty mid present but in a very organic way.

The 210v is a sealed cabinet, very controlled and even sound, and eq's quite well. Very good for upright. At it's price point, I don't think there is anything else like it.

i am also glad to report that i just bought a second one for a couple summer shows. thinking that i may need the extra support for a couple outdoor shows i have coming up. i should rephrase "need" i should say it will be nice to have clean tone at higher volumes.

what i've been thinking lately and to add to what mr pc said about the sealed cab - does this cab sound so good for upright because it is basically a 2x10 version of Francis' 12" sealed cab? the 12" speaker cab plans are found here on TB somewhere. if i was a little more slick with this site, i'd post the link.

i guess that i was kinda wrong on that guess.

the "small box" part was right but it seems that it is a ported cab where the ampeg is sealed.

I was discussing this yesterday with a tech..it isn't as simple as throwing some drivers in a sealed box and throwing it together. Dimensions, driver, and materials all play a critical role. The 210v is really something in that it's tried and true and won't disappoint if you understand what it is. An affordable cab that sounds great, looks great, and does what it was designed to do very well. If you need a loud standalone cab with extended low end, if you need a cab that is low profile for those Clark Kent jazz guy gigs, you should stay away. People will notice this cabinet..but you can always bring along a long, sheer thin black veil and pretend that you don't have an amplifier. Put that and a vase of flowers on top, it's a chick magnet.

Also retiring the old polytone, one of my NL210s and my VL208, just put up for sale threads.

Well, the Polytone was once the go to amp for gigging DB players, but I don't think you'll miss it that much.
Looks like I'll be the last one of us to sell my VL 208. Great cabinet, power hungry, kinda heavy.

Hanging onto one NL210, which is a fabulous electric bass and doubling cabinet. And also my V4b and the 210AV.

Never should have sold my Focus 2RIII..

This seems to give me some good options:
Clarus / 210AV - really nice compact set up that works for light duty electric too.
Clarus / NL210 - which works really well for doubling when electric sets get loud.

Peter, last I heard you also have a Monique PreAmp yes?

I sure am. I've become less vocal about my amp choices but I am rather content to just work this combo the best I can.
