Ampeg heads, which one?

alright, if not any of those ampeg heads, would a gk backline 600 be a better choice? because that was the other head i was thinking. i'm also planning on buying an ehx blackfinger tube compressor, which i think will help the tone for all of them, if that changes anyone's opinion.

I would say out of what you listed the SVT 450 would be my choice. I use the SVT 1000, which are kind of seldom seen these days. The sound is good for the buck, Every player in the world can't afford a $300.00 retube for a $1000.00 amp. Go with whatever works the best for you that is within your budget.

Jimmy's actually right - the SVT-450 is the same as the B2RE. The B2RE was upgraded to 450 watts from 350 at the same time the SVT-350 got bumped up.

B-2RE = SVT-450H

I use a 350h alot. I got it used for $275 and it's alright.
I run it through a 410he and it works well as long as you're not too loud.
I see that the 350 gets no respect here but I disagree with that popular opinion.
For what it is ,it works just fine. That said I would NEVER buy a new one. It's not worth stupid money.

thanks for the help everyone, but the likelihood of me being able to afford anything more than any of those heads is unlikely. none of the heads i listed are going cost me more than 300 used, and because i'm a college student, i can't really afford much more than that.

Then I'd recommend a used G-K 700rb-II, Peavey Tour 450, Peavey Mark VI, VIII, or Firebass 700 in your price range - whichever pops up first... Any of those amps are better options than the Ampeg SS amps you listed... Sure, Ampeg makes great tube amps, but their SS amps are a terrible value, IMO - under powered for their ratings, and "meh" tone...

Go for the B2R. It has the best sound of any Ampeg SS amp I have listened to. I also had a 3 pro and the B2R was louder and cleaner. The only drawback to the B2R is the fan will go at sometime but Digitech has them for $25 for about three of them, minimum order.

You can fart louder than a 3Pro.

Or save another $150 and get a Genz shuttle something.

i'm with georgestrings on this one, so i'd look for a used GK 700RBII. (BTW, i got my GK1001RBII used locally on craigslist for $325.00 in mint condition which isn't much more than your budget allows). there are ALOT of great deals on quality used gear right now.

If you HAVE to go some what SS with Ampeg, I highly recommend the SVT 6. It's just like the 3, but on 'roids.

But probly WAY over the OP's $$ limit. Did U look into a 2nd hand V4, or V4B or V4BH- any of these all tube Ampegs will sound great thru the cabs U mentioned!!
If they're too much $$$$ I'd either go the B2R(I had one & it did sound fine, nice sound but I didn't like the opto-comp. in it. & in the end I'm a tube guy- have been since I was 12 y.o. so...........
If thats not in the pic- I'd look at Hartke's they are at AMAZINGLY cheap $$$ even NEW!! & can be dialled in to get a great sound!! TYhe ones I've seen /heard/used have all been reliable & worked well. The older HA models - HA3500(350w) have Tube & s.s. pre amps. the later models the LH series are s;posed to be great too & have tbe pre's AFAIK.

If I wanted the Ampeg sound but was on a budget, I'd just buy a VT Bass pedal and throw it onto any amp. But I think you should start with a sound you like first so you don't have to depend on it. So if I was looking for an Ampeg sounding amp on a budget, I'd get a used Markbass LMII.
