I'm considering an Ampeg Micro-VR stack. It just needs to be sufficient to fit-in with the drummer, and 2 guitarists in a extremely small venue. I've done quite a few searches and haven't found many reviews, tests, or comparisons. Anyone tried one? Own one? Know someone...etc. None of the stores in my area has the cab or the head so I can't try the pair.

I currently use a GK Backline 110.

We'll have a full review (with two of the 2x10's) in issue #4, but based upon the brief time I spent with the Micro-VR and one of the 2x10's, I was impressed by how much of the full-sized SVT vibe is was able to deliver. There are sonic differences, to be sure, but it was at least "reminiscent" of the big brother, and I consider that to be an accomplishment.

Tom.

That's the best "review" I've seen yet! When is issue #4 due?

I actually had the pleasure of playing one of these (with only one 210, mind you) at SSE Music in La Crosse, WI a couple of weeks ago. It sure is neat! I was only in there looking at PA gear with my friends (I try to avoid their bass section since they've got some nice amps; I don't need more GAS). I caught this little jem out of the corner of my eye and had to fire it up. My time with it was limited because the sales associates began flooding the area. I'm pretty shy in that setting.

The amp did have a really cool sound. I'm impressed. If the head had more power to offer, it would be an awesome lightweight amp that would give several of its competitors a run for their money. The 200 watts (correct me if I'm wrong) at 4 ohms would be great for practicing and would probably be perfect for gigs with full PA support. It sounded good enough that I'd just ignore the relatively low power ratings.

I want to go back there and try it out again. Mmm.

I just played one of these this weekend in a music shop. I regularly play a SVT rig and I'm looking for a small-gig rig that can deliver a similar sound.

I was very very impressed with the micro-vr. It was definitely very similar to it's big brother. It felt like it responded quicker, probably because of being solid state. It was punchy, and the eq was very powerful. The most impressive part was how much low-end it could put out. I didn't expect that. I can't comment on how it sounds in a gig situation but I would guess it sounds pretty good with PA support for smaller gigs. I'm considering buying one now. Hope that helps!

I've spent a little bit of time with one now.
It sounds really nice. It's hella light.
That's about all I'm prepared to say at this point, but as Tom noted, full on review with two cabs coming up...

I tried out the Ampeg Micro-VR stack, it was the amp head and the speaker cab today with a Sterling by Musicman SB14 and it sounded good and I tried a Squier Vintage Modified fretted Jazz Bass, a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass, and a Fender 70's Jazz Bass and for some reason I thought the Squiers sounded better than the Fender.

I can hardly wait for your review! Thanks!
NAd thanks to the contributors here with your personal experiences. The micro stack sounds like a must-have for collectors. That's you Tom! :D

In the spirit of full disclosure, Chef will be handling the use/listening review. But continuing in the same vain, I'm definitely going to be hanging onto this rig (or one just like it) when he's done. :bassist: :D

I used it at rehearsal with my cajun band tonight, which is bass, drums, accordian, guitar, and two fiddles.
They can get pretty loud for what they are.
Took the micro vr with one cab, and a P with flats.
It sounded like a P with flats thru an ampeg should.

I actually played one today.. it sounded.. good

I wasn't blown away and I didn't think it was as loud as it should be... it is REALLY small...(that's what she said)

I don't think it would hold it's own in a band situation at all..

any other specific questions ?

JON

Ahh, but what kind of band are you referring to?
