Ampeg Micro VR

Besides the wattage difference, does anyone know if there is a tonal difference between the Ampeg Micro VR head, and their Portaflex PF-350 head? Thank-you.

They are very similar, but yes, there is a tonal difference. The Micro VR is more growly and aimed at more of the SVT type sound, a little more attitude. The PF-350 is in the B-15/fliptop ballpark, so a bit warmer/smoother.

I own both of them, and I don't disagree with Jumblemind entirely, but there's more to it than that IMHO. I've compared them extensively, and I've come to the conclusion that they sound pretty well identical but the PF350 does come off as a little tighter and smoother, especially at higher volumes, because it has more headroom. But take out the preamp and go through their DI's and they sound identical because they have the same preamp. It's only when the power amps come into play that they sound different, and it's not a huge difference at all. Both will get growly if you crank the gain, but the Micro VR definitely runs out of clean headroom quicker and is more prone to the growl at higher volumes. If I could only keep one, it would be the PF350, although the Micro VR looks super cool so I'm glad I can keep both ;)
