Ampeg PF-500 humming

I've been playing around with the amp in a quiet room at home today (just a Fender Jazz bass plugged directly into the amp with a high quality cable) and have noted the following:
1. The fan runs constantly. Is that normal? Could that be causing hum?
2. The amp itself seems to hum. This is nearly eliminated when the Gain is at 5 or less.

Did you check the -40dB pad button position as well as where your gain might be set?
Try turning down your gain and press the pad button in and see what happens....

Hahaha! I think you solved it. My amp doesn't know any of the words.Are there any dimmers on the same circuit? That can cause a hummm.
Also, it might hum if it doesn't know the words.
No dimmers involved.
No difference to the amp hum. I don't own the Mackie so, I couldn't test that. I own the Gig-Rac but, that doesn't get the hum.
This problem is just puzzling. I see the Mackie has an out-board power supply, I wonder if the board itself does not have a true ground.
Could I suggest for the member running the mixer to disconnect all but your amp and see if the hum is still there. If it is no longer there connect one at a time everything else. It could be another input setting up a loop.

I always have had to use the pad. But I have an active bass and use a pre-amp.
I will have him try that. As for outboard power, I'm not sure about that. We do have powered fronts and monitors and do. We do not run anything using phantom power.
The user manual I found shows the mixer uses a power supply adaptor (an outboard power supply), doesn't run an ac cord direct to the back of the mixer. That is what I was talking about

I have never encountered any loud humming from my PF 500, just fan noise, not nearly loud enough to warrant any complaints.
It may not hum, but it sings whenever its in use. just my 2 cents...

Honestly, the hum, while noticeable, doesn't bother me too much. It's our guitar player/master of the PA that is bothered by it.
BTW, should the fan run constantly?
