Ampeg PF500/PF350 - part 3, I think

I am almost positive that a PF500 is my next purchase- I gig full time and need to start the upgrade train. I need some help though.

How has the compressor been for you guys? I use a pedal now, and I'm wondering if the one knob will eliminate my need for it. I use my compression for general purpose dynamics control and punch- nothing fancy.

Secondly, I have a vintage Marshall 115 bass cab- what are my risks of phase issues if I want to run that parallel with a PF cab? How will I know if there is a phase issue? Is it fixable if it happens?

And lastly, dearest LordJimmyAmpegPoobahMaster, I don't really know what a B15 is supposed to sound like, but am I assuming correctly that the words "warm", "full", and "vintage" are on the list, and that the PF500 is almost a one-way ticket to them?

For a one knob compressor, the PF500's is outstanding. It really tames the dynamics, and if you know how to use one, it can add decent sustain and punch.

I can't tell you about the Marshall, though, never used one, don't have the specs for it. Lots of people are using PF115 and PF210 together, though...

I'm not Jimmy, but the PF500 and PF115 can sound very B15.

There's been much ado about the PF500/300 doing the much sought-after warm and vintage tone, but I wonder what else is under the hood?

I mean, what other tonal capabilities do these heads have?

They'll growl like an SVT, too. They won't (at least I haven't been able to) do a truly "clean" sound, though. There is always that Ampeg sound in there.

Thanks much. I already have clean in my Shuttle and was really impressed with the warm coloration of the PF500 for something different.

During my brief PF500 demo though, I didn't get around to searching out other tones. I was just too immersed in the B15 tone to play around with it.:bassist:

I know a lot of folks are liking the 500, but I want to share a little PF350 love. I just came back from rehearsal with my upright. We rehearse full volume with PA support, but I have to say that there was so much goodness and volume coming out of the PF115 that I don't think I needed it (but our drummer likes it in the mix). With the gain at noon and master at 1 o'clock, I had plenty of room. I love this set up.

There were some earlier comments about it sounding more like a B-15, and I think now I have to agree (and it doesn't really sound at all like my SVT). I guess it's generally a brighter sounding amp, and I keep the treble and mids rolled off and boost the bass to get what I want. Just knob twiddling and it's delivering. What I like beyond that is it just seems so responsive. I felt like I could play anything tonight and it was going to do justice (for better or worse!). Very happy with this rig.

Hi folks,

yes, I`ve got the PF-500 now.
Instead of the Kustom KBX-500 which I was running for first.
But they aren`t able to deliver in Europe.

So I finally got the Ampeg PF-500.
Know what folks?
I guess it was the damned right decision.
This little amplifier has a really good performance and produces the "Ampeg" Sound!
And isn`t that the thing we all want?
At least it`s me who does so....;-)))

Well, I am satisfied with the amplifier itself but I am thinking about a small, lightweight and bluesworthy cabinet.
Actually I use an Ashdown ABM fullstack (1x15, 4x10).
But these cabinets are quite big and heavy (especially the 4x10) and I want to carry my
complete equipment with my small car.
So I am thinking of the PF-115 cabinet.

My first band is a classic rock band where I always need that big stack.
But now I`m about to set up a small blues band for club gigs.
This is the reason why I am collecting that new lightweight stuff......

I've ran the whole GK gammut, 700RBII, MB500, MB500fusion the NEO cabs, ect.....I really like GK amps, but want a different tone.

After I pay a few things off, I'm going to pick up the PF500, and am pretty excited about it. I will have a left over 8ohm GK410 MBX cab, how do you think it will pair with the Ampeg?? or should I sell it and get something else.??

lowendblues,
Only you can tell if you will like that cab with the PF500. I have had a couple of GK 's highend cabs. I started using the 2 Ampeg SVT210AVs or my 1x10 custom cab (If I use a cab at all), and sold all my other cabs. It wasn't a GK vs Ampeg thing...it's just that I appear to like sealed cabs in small boxes and it took me a while to discover that. Many people don't. You are just going to have to try it and see if you like it.

For those of you with SVT's, how would 2 x PF210HE cabs go with something like a SVT-CL?

I've now got a PF350 on the way, and would like to grab two of these 210's to bring them down to 4ohms.

I currently use Ashdown's ABM115 1x15 with an ABM210 2x10 and I feel it might not be the best combination with either my SVT-CL or the PF350.

I really like the portaflex fliptop thing so I'd be wanting to take advantage of that.
