Ampeg PF500/PF350 - part 3, I think

They'll growl like an SVT, too. They won't (at least I haven't been able to) do a truly "clean" sound, though. There is always that Ampeg sound in there.

I have gotten a "truely" clean sound. Although I think that term is fairly subjective. I used/own the PF500.

This is how I got it. I turned the tweeter all the way up and kept the gain down so it wouldn't clip at all. Raised the highs and lows just a tad. kept the mid control on 3 with the mids at about noon. I had ultra low and high pushed in. It can cop a very clean hi-fi sound. I got it to sound just like my SWR head. This will require you to turn up the volume knob a bit more. I think it handles it well though.

:bassist:

I have never had any problem getting a clean sound out of any Ampeg. I must admit it bewilders me when I hear other people say they can't get a clean sound out of them.

Just got my PF-350

I'm a very happy chappy.
Absolutely love the tone, and it certainly has enough volume for my needs - shakes the window frames through just my abm210 so that's all good.

I was worried that I'd need more volume or a mid selector; not a problem. Just totally chuffed at how good it sounds! Really nails the Ampeg tone.

Just wired up my new, ampeg pf500, man oh man, this amp " Pumps"! Ran it thru Avatar 2x12" neo 8 ohm , then thru my 1 15" Eminence 15" kappa pro lf 4 ohm custom built cab. This amp is amazing! Total " Ampeg " sound ! Love it, especially at 11 lbs. If you like the Ampeg sound, Buy this amp! It is the best kept secret out there for low low $!

use the PF500 last night on a gig. At least tried.. Limiter was kicking in constantly. we were a little louder than usual doing tons of ABB covers and stuff like that. Used a Avatar 4 ohm 2-12 with deltas in it. Had gain about 12 oclock, BMT - 12, 11, 12 and master volume about 12:30. Bass was a Fodera YYS with only the bass slightly past the midpoint and had to bring down. As soon as i started to dig in it was cutting off. wound up using my backup head and it had no problem keeping up - GK backline 600 - 300 watts. All the reviews seem to not have the same issue. I really like the sound of it but this is troublesome. From the sound of it is there something wrong or is this just another class D drawback. I find it hard to think that this head with the single 15 cab would every be loud enough by itself. Sounds like i have a lemon.

what level was your compressor at. i have learned to get a good volume out of this head you have to really use that compressor.

Certainly sounds odd. I run mine with gain around 2-3 o'clock and the master up to and above noon and have never had it cut out on me. I'm also running passive basses and usually have the compressor at about 11.

I have the gain between 1 and 2, compressor at 10, Bass at 3, mid at 2 selector on 2, treble on 12, master dimed, and have not had any trouble; and it's LOUD through a SWR Goliath III 4x10.

Or it sound like you have the bass boost engaged. I hate using it with the master at 10:00 or higher. It only does any good at low volumes, at least for me. Bang the gain and nothing else I say...

I had the same problem with an Avatar 212. Posted it in this thread. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/ampeg-pf500-pf350-pt-ii-5-a-797352/index45.html#post11556020

I was in the 45 day return period so I sent the pf500 back. I told Music123 about it but I had a feeling they wouldn't be able to duplicate it so I just sent it back and ate the shipping.

answers to all the above. comp about 10 oclock. No bass boost . Basses - Fodera YYS and K Smith Burner with preamp both on and off. Same problems. Kinda sucked as i was so psyched with my 2 new toys to play.

So here is an update - Today i spent about 1 hour on the rig with the same settings as they were not touched from sutdown and the same basses. sounded great, garage walls shaking - never happened and had tons of headroom. Then it hit me. Keyboard player forgot his power strip so he used mine while i plugged in the guitard players strip. He had what appeared to be a cheap one - fits.... and he was using a fender brown tweed thing like clapton uses with a pedal board also into it. IIRC I remember seeing somewhere on TB about tubes eating amps up so I ask you all - could that have been the reason as the pf500 was starving for some power. sounded great today and I also put in thru an nice (early 80's) old sonic 1-15 cab with a JBL 145? the one with the huge front that sticks out about 1 1/2 from the baffle. was earth shaking with the 8 ohms , i can't imagine two of these..
Back to the power problem - I actually had that happen over the summer on an outside gig near the beach in Greenwich CT where the whole band was running on only one line and of course only my amp (ampeg b-5 over a 810 cab) was having cutting issues until the breakers heated up and then we blew the power 6-8 times in the last 45 minutes. I didn't think just 1 tube amp could have the same effect???? Plus the GK was fine... class D issue/??? JIm

I use gain about 12-1, bass 10-11, treble 12, mid 10 on setting 2, no ultra high or low switches, compressor 10-12, depending. Master from 11 to as high as 3 if needed. That's with a passive Jazz bass or active G&L in the padded input. A bit different using the upright. Speaker is the 8 ohm PF115 cab. Never a cutout.

Not sure if there is a technical answer (I'm sure there is) but I have experienced on several gigs where I have to plug into the same strip as one of our guitar players. He uses a budda head and 4x12 cab. My bass always sounds thin when I do that. Almost like I can't get enough power to my amp. Could be in my mind though. Maybe someone knows for sure.

I ran it with an 8 ohm cab with the gain maxed and had no clip/limit problems. There's a clip in the same thread of the cool distorted tone. But with the 4 ohm avatar (neo) it didn't play well. In my basement with no other amps running. I posted a clip with another amp--same cab, same power cord, same outlet, same speaker cable. No problem.

Maybe I had a lemon. But given the clipping issues with the micro at 4 ohms and the loud fan ;) I didn't feel like dealing with it. Especially since I liked the other amp so much.

Might be time for something like [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].
Something like this one would be slick to have in a power cord. I hate sharing a power strip with another amp. I carry long heavy extension cords so I seldom have to.

not that it really relates, but I had the exact same problem with the orange TB500. orange kept replacing them. I'm on my FIFTH head. I think it is a class D issue but seems to be a fixable issue. I have not had that issue with my current head but it did take almost a year to get one that wouldn't cut out.
