Not having the speakers attached should not have caused a problem, since the manual clearly states that, "there is no harm in playing the PF-500 without speakers." However, I guess if you were using a 1/4" plug, it may have shorted, due to being partially inserted.

+1, could be this. As far as I knew, all-tube amps are the only heads that would have trouble if you didn't have it (properly
) connected to a cab before turning it on.5sg.

Can anyone say something about the "Power-Rating" of the PF500? I've read some Statements, that say for the rated 500 Watts the Amp would not be loud enough? Is that so?

Running two 8 ohm cabs will give you the full 500 watts.
Heres the different combinations:
2 x 16ohm = 300 watts
1 x 8ohm = 300 watts
2 x 8ohm = 500 watts
1 x 4ohm = 500 watts

I think that "not loud enough" stuff is a crock, personally. Every Ampeg amp I've ever seen go through a bench test hits the claimed wattage mark or goes over it. And with a B2RE vs PF500, PF500.
Loud enough for what? What sort of volume are you seeking?
Number of drivers and cab efficiency would play a large part in the volume equation.
I'd take a PF500 over a B2RE any day. I've played a B2RE once, and it sounded rather lifeless which reinforced my previous anti-Ampeg attitude. The PF500 seriously changed my opinion about Ampeg. It sound so sweet!
i had a quick question about this head. i just got one for xmas, been looking at getting one for awhile, tone is great, size is great, definitely like the head. im trying to figure out how id run two cabs with it tho. looks like theres one speaker input and one speakon input. does this mean if i want to run 2 8ohm cabs i have to use one 1/4 inch and one speakon to do so? just found it a little funny that theyd wire two different input types in parallel, but i guess its not an issue. anyone do this with their pf500?
Both speakon and 1/4" are parallel. Use either, or both to run 2 8ohm cabs. You can also run one cable out from the amp to cab #1, and another cable out of cab #1 to cab#2. This is all standard parallel wiring.

Now I'm looking to pair one of these heads with it. I've been set on the 350 for awhile, but I was wondering if the extra 100 bucks was worth it to get the extra wattage and compression, etc.

Hey Jimmy, how much are you using the limiter on your pf350? I have to admit I'm not totally clear on when it would be appropriate to use the limiter.

In my opinion it's worth the extra $100. You get more wattage (if you ever need it), a variable mid frequency selector, a nice transparent compressor, a mute button which comes in handy as well, a ground lift button, a -40 db mic level button, and a pre and post EQ selector when running direct.
I use mine through two Genz Benz Neox 112 cabs. It's a nice setup. When I don't need full wattage I can grab the head and one of the GB 112's for smaller venues. For large gigs I can take both cabs and put those 500 ampeg watts to use.
For what it's worth this head sounds fantastic with GB Neox 112 cabs.
I never use the limiter at all, Josh. Not into compression of any kind anymore.
