Ampeg PF500/PF350 - part 3, I think

No Jimmy, I have`nt, I have to say my ears are not what they used to be, I dont hear certain things that my family hear, sometimes I ask them to turn the telly up and they say its already too loud, I dont hear the cooker timer (excuse for bad cooking LOL), I have been on bass for only two years but was a guitard for 20 before that, I wonder if my guitar days have damaged my hearing in the mid frequency range ?? could be why I like to have a lot of mids on bass to compensate ??

Its a shame that so many of us only really think about the perils of loud music when we are actually affected by it, I do often wear ear plugs now, its impossible to pinpoint when the damage (if indeed it is down to that) was done though, I have been going to loud gigs since I was 16 (which was 1978 !) there have been some stupidly loud bands in that time-think Motorhead, Metallica, Saxon, Maiden, ACDC etc .
On the other hand, I might plug in my BF Super Twelve (when it arrives) and discover all the glorious mid tones that are hiding from me at the moment-I really hope so :smug:

Well I haven't heard those particular cabs you have, but it's possible they're not voiced strong in the mids. At any rate, Alex is a great guy and builds some nice stuff, so hopefully it'll work out for you.

I think thats the reason Jimmy, the BC212 is good for what it is but its still a relatively cheap cab .
I must admit I have never spent quite so much money on a cab as the BF, but the amount of great feedback on the Super 12 suggests that I am making a good decision :)

I am off now, just had a bellyful of nice food and wine and am in need of a coffee and after dinner snooze ;)

The 2X10 box actually goes lower.

Played a party/jam session last night with a bunch of folks from different bands mixing it up all night. We had 2 bass rigs there:

1. Kawaii 5 string with barts and active pre
PF 500
2x Ampeg 410he stacked

right next to

2. 75 Fender USA Pbass - unmodified
Ampeg B500dr
Ampeg 610 hlf

Both rigs in excellent to pass for new condition.

The bassists there generally agreed that the Pf and 810's sounded much better than the B500/610. With the PF's controls all @ 12:00 everyone was really digging the sound. I don't know why you would want to copy the sound of another rig, when you are bringing this to the game.

If only there was an affordable LIGHTWEIGHT cab that could bring this sound, I would never need anything else!

I am interested in the subject of selecting a cab(s) for my PF500. I considered the the two PF cabs designed for these amps, and they look too..light duty?..,or something, I dont know. I was thinking about buying a used cab of the ElectroVoice TL606 design, with the EV 15 B, or L driver. (I really like the Mesa Deisel version of this cab). I am not really in a position where I can listen to the PF cabs, so I am interested in hearing other peoples impression of these, or other options. My one and only original rig (gone since 76), was an early sixties Fender P Bass, and a (brown colored 50 W) Fender Basssman head, connected to a sixties era, and crappy soundlig Bassman 2X15 cab. I am not sure if all this Neo stuff is worth considering. Is it a different sound? Is it a compromise to make a lighter cab? What are the tonal differences between the PF 210, and the 115 cabs?

I run a single pf210he, and its not enough power up against 2 guitars in a rock band, just practicing. Sounds good though, just not really loud enough (for me, I'm sure the other guys think its fine :p). But you probably already knew that.

One thing to consider is that "Sealed enclosures" (infinite baffles, acoustic suspension) will never be as efficient as a ported enclosure.
These enclosures (2x10 & 1x15 mentioned here) have an efficiency of slightly less than 100 Db, an enclosure with a rating of 103 Db will in effect be like doubling the power or adding an identical speaker.
So it's not hard to understand why theses cabs may not be as loud as one may have hoped for.
However, I'm personally attracted to sealed enclosures for their sonic accuracy in spite of their inefficiency.

haven seen many 103 db 2x10 or 1x15, well I think I havent seen any. are there any?

Also, some people said that specs on 210 and 115 portaflex cabs are reversed in the website. is that info correct o ir just something they think? I mean some 210 can go lower than 115 deppending on the design, in the other hand I see that 210 has a better sensityvity 99,6 vs 99,5 wich it seems correct to me as 210 usually push more air so I'm not sure the description is reversed.

I would like to ask loud about this but this guys dont have customers questions email in year 2012...

The product manual says 50-17K for the 1x15, 53-17K for the 2x10 with useable low frequency being 35 and 38 respectively. Sensitivity in the manual is 99.5 for the 1x15, and 99.6 for the 2x10 so they got that right on the website at least.

Last night was the first time that I was able to use my PF500 with the PF115 cab for a show, and I took along my B100R to run along side of it (just in case). It was a gig with my oldies/classic rock project at a restaurant and we were just using a mixer head for vocals and a little bit of kick drum. Guitars and bass were running off stage volume. I had no "cutting out" issues on the PF, but I also ran it with the compressor off. I played a Gibson Thunderbird and had the PF gain at 1:00, volume at 1:00. I was really surprised how the two amps comapred for volume and tone in the live setting. For being only 100 watts, the B100R was noticeably louder than the PF500 and I really could have done the gig with just the B100R by itself. I had to twist some knobs on the PF to get it to match the B100R for tone, but once I got it dialed in the PF sounded really good. Overall I was pleased how the PF worked as a unit, but for whatever reason the B100R just had a little more mojo working for it. Maybe because it was QC checked by "Tabatha" ;)

The PF115 goes considerably lower than the B100r, and the lower a cab goes, the more watts it'll take to amplify at the volume of a cab with a higher voiced low end.

I've used my Avatar 2x10 with the PF500 last night, with PA support, but that combination ripped right through the mix even with a ten piece guitar, keyboard, and horn band. Gain at 1:00, master at maybe 10:00, no compression, all else flat. Alternated between an ESP/LTD Surveyor (for the new stuff) and a Sting P for the Motown.
