Ampeg PF500/PF350

I'm still holding out for a PF350. I dont drive and get around with buses and trains to get to practices (where they already have cabs) and the Micro VR is a bit bulky to haul around (even though it is very light) The 350 looks like it its slim enough to fit in a gig bag or back pack

I bought a micro vr last year and with two of the matching 2x10 cabs. IMO, it wasn't loud enough for me. But I blast and am competing with two tube guitar amps as well. We could barely feel the micro vr in practice, cranked up all the way. I ended up trading for an Eden combo, now I'm working with an SVT350h and 410 svt cab. They are plenty loud but I really want the portaflex 500 head and get matching cabs for it one of each (2x10 & 1x15)

If I did this, do you think the power will be comparable or better than my current setup of the 350 svt and 410 cab?

Also, would you suggest my choice of cabs be different? (instead of mixing the 1x15 & 2x10)

Lastly, I wonder what if adding that tech 21 vt pedal would up the tube sound even more. Anyone have one of those?

absolutely yes. stick with one type or the other.

i have a vt deluxe and love it. however, rather than up the tube sound quotient of my micro vr, instead it supplements it. the micro vr will do a slight breakup but won't do full-on overdrive. the vt and vt deluxe do. but they're more difficult to dial in a good sound than the micro vr because the knobs are so sensititive and interactive with each other, so that's the tradeoff.

that's because you're still at the "dazzled by wattage" stage, and you're not realizing that being able to use full wattage results in such a tiny increase in volume that adding a second cab will blow it away.

I like more high end and treble sound vs low end funk. It's my understand that the 10s work better for me for purpose of high end. Is that a correct assumption?

I know that really sounds like a dumb question.

I don't know if there's any dazzling going on, it's more that I want to buy a "unit" and have it be complete, rather than having to buy something else to have it realize full potential.
For example, the GK MB212-500 watts and the 2-12's handle the whole load and done. If I wanted more, I'd get something else.
No bigee. Still pretty psyched on the Ampeg.

not really a dumb question, because you can design speakers to do what you want. traditionally, ampeg 10"s have a little more high end than their 15", but since both cabs have tweeters, they should both be able to handle the highs you like.

well to each his own, but i'm a big cab guy and i see no reason to throttle small/medium cabs with so much wattage. then again, i'm old ;)

I agree, the PF350 and PF500 are a bit smaller than the Micro VR...

FWIW though, the Micro VR fits just fine in a standard backpack (although, not in the pocket of a gig bag). I carry mine in a back pack with plenty of room for speaker cables, guitar cables, power cables for the amp, and my tuner and my XD wireless setup. There's still plenty of room to spare if I needed to carry anything else. If my bass case had a strap, I'd be able to carry my backpack with amp and everything in it, bass, and two of the 210 cabs all in one trip from the car.

I think I started backwords. As someone that had no exposure to gear when I started playing alot (about 4 years ago) I took all the advise I had read on these forums. I bought lightweight micro heads, smaller light cabs lots of stuff that would enable me to make one trip from the car.

Now I'm using big cabs, heavy tube amps or combos. Well, lets just say I'm cool with making 2 trips to the car. Some would say thats stupid but to me having tried both routs, there is no comparison.
I'm glad Ampeg is trying there hand at the light weight heads and cabs but I'll stick with there heavy stuff.

anyone who says using the heavy stuff is stupid is no friend of mine. ok, well they may be a friend of mine, but i certainly take no stock in what anyone says about my stuff...they're not me. and bass players are often so arrogant about their likes and dislikes that i just ignore them or goof on them for being wussies.

having said that, i am having a hard time bringing the svt/810 these days when i have a micro vr stack ;)

Yeah, I ordered a GK MB500 in late January. every time I would call for an update,they still didn't have them in stock. I got tired of waiting, cancelled that order and popped for the 500. I haven't heard one yet. I hope it blows me away.

I've got my PF500 sitting next to me, just came in today... unfortunately, I haven't even opened it as I'm still at work. I might be able to get a few minutes with it tomorrow night before/after practice, but it's more likely that I won't be able to really check it out til Saturday with my Avatar 2x10 before a gig. I don't bother turning on an amp at home, I live an apartment and neighbors tends to get irritated quickly. :(
