so I'm wondering if these heads are geared up more for the sealed cabs aka... the portaflex cabs verses other manufactures cabs or maybe more specifically ported cabs.

I'm really want to get this head, but now I'm concerned how it will sound with my orange obc115..

My acoustic is a sealed 15 and it sounded pretty good but that cab has very little down low doesn't fart out but doesn't thump either. This head helps that out a lot but it's a cab issue IMO

Hi all-
Got mine today. (500) Played in the house through an 8 ohm 4 10. I found Gooooood sound.
I think this is the one. Can't wait to gig it at 4ohms. I didn't find any really good break up, but my VT bass through the FX loop blended in partially, seems to provide that.
I can't wait till I can afford (and they are available) a couple of matching 2 10's. I also don't think at this point that I'll have any problems getting enough volume out of this head.
At this point, you can count this as a positive review.

Ampeg typically has the XLR DI out as post EQ on heads that don't have a pre/post selector. According to the system block diagram in the user manual, the XLR out on the PF350 is post EQ: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Maybe it is I'm not sure I'll try it again this weekend to confirm. When I was playing I got connected to the board and the only thing on my amp that worked was the gain. The board was dialed flat and my tone controls didn't seem to change the tones. Btw I was told that the DI is really hot. The Sound guy (a.k.a. My dad/drummer) was fighting the clipping light the whole time. Now I'm a totally new to all of this and looking at the amp's circuit diagram it shouldn't have been that way so maybe I was mistaken or there is a problem. I really like the size of the amp and the sound it has so...

i think that's possible that the di is hot. the di is pretty hot in my micro vr, too. i have to keep the gain below 11:00 in order for it not to distort. fortunately, i rarely if ever use the di. i've used it on a gig once since i got it, and if i had known we were going to play the hall at house of blues and not the restraurant, i'd have just brought my mic (we always use stage volume at the restaurant).

The reason I was using the DI was my 2 guitarist were having a personal pissing match and my dad runs his kick drum though his home pa. It wasn't super loud but I play pretty quietly (I don't like the play till your ears bleed volumes) and they are normally pretty ok with that but I guess one felt the need to pee.

For what it's worth, I used the 500's DI at the gig on the night I did those clips and the sound guy loved it. I had the gain around 2:00 and volume at 10:30-11:00, DI running post EQ and the sound guy didn't mention any issues with signal level. Maybe it's just a difference between the 350 and 500? Or maybe it's a difference in boards? Not sure of the model, but the sound guy has an all-digital 32-channel board. I'm not up on my live sound gear, but even I know it's niiiiice. :)

I wish I could mic my cabs like Jimmy, but this gig is seriously volume controlled since there are 15 of us and we're still too loud for the venue. Things can get out of hand quick! Lol I'm always prepared on DI's though... (1) back of amp (2) Sansamp BDDI on my board (3) failsafe "3rd string" DI in gig bag.

gecko, i play quieter than anyone and i always mic when possible. it can be done.

Hmm. I should've added that for that particular show, I was actually going cab-less and was using the PF500 as an in-ear monitor as an experiment. (duh.... *facepalm*) Sorry.

I know this is a bit of a derail on the thread, but question for you then. If you don't play loud, how do you hit the sweet spot on your amp? For the show previous, I used my Shuttle/2x10. While I had the gain up a bit, I couldn't get the master volume above about 7:30-8:00. I do realize that that setup was overpowered for the gig, but it didn't even come close to the amp's sweet spot.

Just curious, had to ask. :)

doh! hard to mic a cab that you left at home, fer shur ;)

anyway, re: the sweet spot, it's simple...i don't believe in them ;) my bowzer training has enabled me to make even an svt that's barely on sound good. not bragging by any means...it's simple necessity. if i turn up too loud, he gets all angry and yells at me till i turn down. so i've figured out how to get my sound at any pathetically wimpy volume.
