Ampeg PF500/PF350

actually, i just twiddle knobs until it sounds good to me, then hope for the best.

Huh. I apparently have much to learn! ;) lol I'll keep that in mind for the next gig. :)

Could this be done... Plug into the FX Send jack to a 1/4" mixer input?

I don't think there's a balance input on our mixer (it's not mine - I can't verify now). We want to jam through headphones (electronic drum kit, guitar and bass).

Thanks.

Should work just fine. Our guitarist uses the FX Send on his combo to the 2nd combo he uses on the rare occasion he needs an extension cabinet.

I went to my local GC today and spotted a PF500 (they also had the 350). I decided to give it a shot...

Plugged it into a 610HLF, and plugged in a US P-Bass. Didn't have much time to test it out though.

After a couple minutes, I heard some crackling. I unplugged the cable from the bass, still crackling, I unplugged the inst. cable from the amp, still crackling.

Plugged everything back in, figured it was the speaker cable or something.

After another 2 minutes of playing, the fault light came on. Turned it off, then on again... and nothing. I unplugged everything, and put it back and left (was on my lunch break and didn't have time to figure out what the problem was).

For the few minutes I got to test it out... It sounded good! The salesman even came over and said he hadn't even heard it yet, but he liked it too (of course).

Anyway, based on that experience, I may wait a while to pick one up.

The first thing I noticed though, was that it was about 75% larger (and heavier) in size than I had expected it to be... Didn't realize it was going to be as big as it is.

It'll be a while before I can test it with a cab. The PF115HE's and PF210HE's are not available yet in my area (Montreal - Canada). The store I bought the amp at didn't even have the cabs in their computer and the salesperson wasn't informed this series had cabs to match these heads.

Anyway, I'm not in a hurry to get me a cab since I'm only going to use this amp as a practice amp (through headphones) and to bring over to my drummer's house when we meet up to have our basement jams once in a while. We all use headphones when we jam - the drummer has an electronic drum kit and my guitar player has a Rolland Cube30. I'll hook up the 350 in our mixer via the XLR out.

This is my first bass amp. I play mostly guitar. I bought the PF350 mainly because it was a cheap Ampeg, its simplicity and for future expandability possibilities (I didn't want to lug a combo amp around) - I'll get a cab if we ever decide to start gigging. From first impression, the PF350 looks well built. It's heavier than I thought and the fan is quiet too. It might be a smaller fan than the fan on the PF500. I didn't get a chance to get a good look at the PF500 since I was after the 350, but the 500's casing looked a little bigger than the 350.

The store just called to confirm my bass was in today. I'll be able to test the amp better tomorrow and let you know what I think of if, even though I might not be the best critic being new to bass. I'll do my best and will try to post some pictures of the amp too when I get a chance.

it seems like the lows arent lows there more like low mids. sounds weird. i dont think im a fan

See, that's what I'm talking about with differences between tastes (and not in a negative way). I personally thought the lows were great. With the 500 through my Avatar B210 neo, I was quite impressed with this amp's beefiness, even with a flat EQ. My Jazz bass sounded awesome with a great strong low end. I actually liked a bit of low end cut, which I've never experienced with any previous amp.

Different strokes for different folks I guess... if it's not for you, there's certainly nothing wrong with that. :bassist:

I have the PF500 & I will echo the previous post, the lows are really strong. I lower the bass & treble as well, & boost the mids at least 1:00 to 2:30. I am really digging this amp & like all the midrange positions except position 5 which I've never found usefull on other Ampegs. In the 1 position 220 hz I get a great meat & potatoes rock sound that works great for the eclectic 70's punk songs I'm playing with my band. The head is not a featherweight but I'm not complaining as it's still lighter than any other amp I've owned. The fan is a little on the loud side, but not an issue when playing & the amp has never felt anything more than warm after playing for extended periods. Overall with all of it's useful features & tones In a somewhat compact package I'm really happy so far.

My PF350 arrived today!

I carefully unpacked it. Put it on top of my 2x 210AV cabs and under the Micro VR. Thus I'm able to easily switch between the two. I let it rest for ± half an hour before firing it up.

Then I turned on both the Micro VR and thePF350. I plugged into the Micro VR and played for a while.
Then switched to the PF350 and...
Nothing but a loud hum and somewhere deep in that hum some almost unhearable bass.

On the PF350 is an orange led that the Micro VR does not have.
It says "fault" and on my PF350 it burned all the time.

So I decided to unplug and let the amp rest for another 30 minutes.
Then I fired it up again, plugged in and got the same result.

It's going back to the store - they will replace it.
So have a little more patience for my review, please.
