Ampeg PF500/PF350

I had the cut out issue with 4 orange terror bass amps (they are sending me a fifth thinking THIS one won't do it).
it's not clipping.
orange said it's a safe guard to protect the amp. when you dig in (no matter the volume) it pulls more power & if your power source isnt a solid steady current (I.e. next to impossible especially in a bar) the amp cuts power to the amp to protect it. customer service at orange said they keep adjusting the sensitivity because it cuts too easily.
sounds like ampeg has the same issue.
I believe it's a class D issue & would rather have a heavier amp if it meant I can adjust volume & attack & not be afraid it's gonna cut out for a few seconds....

PF500 arrived today as I purchased as a backup. After trying it for about 10 minutes it went back in the box for a refund. IMO the fan is very noisy for practice purposes and it sounded thin. Can't imagine why the fan would be that noisy for a class D amp. The pre set mid selector knob didn't do much at all to my ears. It also seemed a little on the bulky side in terms of form factor.

Just curious: have u ever used an Ampeg mid selector switch? Took me a while to learn how to use it on my first Ampeg.

I just got a pf500 and the fan noise isnt terrible. I mean you can hear it but it's not crazy loud.

Bought a PF500 last week from the local GC. My area only has demos available and the cabs are on back order. Probably going to buy the matching portaflex 1/15 cab when they are in stock. Jammed Sunday with a Grateful Dead/G'vmt Mule type of jam band with pf500 head through a fender 4/10. Plenty of oomph to compete with drums / dual lead guitars and organ. Added my carvin 15 speaker cab with the 4/10 to the mix and the rig is more than enough to play the locals bars with my classic rock cover band. So far pretty happy but I really don't get all the comments about excessive fan noise. Never going to hear the fan at practices or the places I play.

Some questions for people who own the PF500.

- What do you think about the onboard compressor? Can you get a fat squeezed sound out of it... with long sustain? (That's the way I like it... don't judge me :p)

- Tonality: Can you get a low-mid heavy sound out of it? I guess so with boosting 220HZ with the mid selector. How do you find the use of the mid selector in general?
And... how close a sound can you get to a B-15?

- The effects loop, does it work well with pedals or is it only suitable for rack gear?

- What about the "ultra low" and "ultra high" buttons?

(I can't download the manual from the Ampeg website.)

Thanks.

Finally Ampeg has a product I might be interested in. :)
A PF500 with two of those 15" cabinets might be all I ever need... or more than I need.

Although from first user reviews in this thread I'm a bit concerned about reliability. Any follow up experiences on that? How does it perform?

Let me know if this doesn't work. I can always email it to you.

Thanks, but that doesn't work.
When Acrobat opens it keeps asking for a password. It's a reoccuring fault on my end. I need to update Acrobat or something.

Now that you're here... :ninja: :D ... what kind of compressor is onboard? Any specifics you can share?
I don't leave home without a compressor. And if I can find an amp with a decent one I would be great not to use a seperate unit.

While I play music, have done general support for Ampeg and now do the social thing, I will need to check in with Zane, the product manager for Portaflex. I will talk with him today and get back here with more details about the compressors on both heads.

Ah, I see.
Well, don't go through too much trouble on my behalf. :)

PF350 has a compressor too?

This being TB another owner of the PF will chime in.

I have serious GAS for a PF500.
The only problem is finding an Ampeg dealer in my area. Several nearby music stores don't carry (or don't want to carry) Ampeg. :hmm:

No worries. If I can get more info, I am happy to share. Well, I hope we can win over the hearts and minds of your local dealers. We have done a lot in the past couple years to change the perception of Ampeg for customers and dealers.

Well, I always was an "Ampeg hater"... until I got to try an SVT2-PRO with an SVT 410hlf a couple of months ago.
It blew my mind... and made the owner of that store unhappy because of the volume and lowend I dialed in.
But I'm not looking for an SVT, but something closer to a B-15... or at least something warmer and with more character than my GK/Hartke setup.

I am still looking for a good 115 for this head. I dont want the pf115 cab that matches...I don't like the looks......yes I know some do...hahaha.

I was interested in the Avatar 3 way but another tber on this thread said the head did not pair well....but I wondered if he had a bad unit.

I am still looking at a number of 115s but here is where I need help. I need one of the 15's that can handle small shows and some bar shows and then have 2 for bigger gigs.

I am looking at Carvin, Avatar, Bagend and the Hartke Hydrive 115....Any other suggestions would help...I am willing to spend up to 500.00....So any suggestions are welcome.
