Ampeg SGT-DI

Well, I got to spend about an hour with the SGT-DI this evening and I definitely dig it! It made me remember that I had actually done a considerable amount of tweaking on my HX Stomp for the SVT/810 sim I was using. Anyway, with the cab sims and SGT circuit, I'm going to have to play around with things a bit more, but I really like it so far! Dials in just like I'd expect one of my other Ampeg amps to, so it feels and sounds like home for this Ampeg fan! :bassist:

any thoughts on the input - have they fixed the issue with overdriving the input so easily on the SCR-DI?

Ampeg themselves have their own plug-in suite, as well, but the PA/brainworks Ampeg stuff is stellar. An Ampeg plug-in was his first plug-in!

+1000

I own both the Suite as well as the PA B15 and a classic SVT. To me, this new pedal is primed for live as the SVT Suite covers everything the SGT-DI offers and with more depth.

Of course, owning the hardware is maybe a better idea in case all of our software faces go the same route as Waves.

I heard yesterday that Waves is rescinding their subscription only plan and going to subscription AND perpetual licenses again. People were PISSED.

Can anyone explain what the cab level knob does?

playing around with it last night, the Cab Level knob seems to me to act like an attenuator and cab volume, it’s not a dry/wet blend but it controls the final volume of the signal chain. so if I turn it all the way down, sound cuts.

I used it to set the final level going to my interface, and then other adjustments like the grit, level and volume knobs on the face of the pedal allow you to work gain staging before that.

This is really cool because (as an extreme example) you can max out the preamp volume, grit and level knobs on the face of the pedal and drive/clip the **** out of the cab and still be able to adjust your final output to a normal volume.

I did this and the Cab Sim light goes from blue/magenta to red when clipping at that stage. It’s probably not the most useful but it’s a good example of an extreme use, and probably how you’ll cop some of those Tim Commerford RATM tones

I’m not a professional and what I’ve said above is my best guess and direct experience using the words I have to describe it :) if anyone else wants to jump in on the cab level knob topic, please do!

Expect to see a lot of SCR-DI and dark glass in the second hand market.
As a home recorder, I basically discontinued using all my pre-interface FX once I bought SVT Suite. This discussion reminded me of all the $$$ I now have sitting a drawer, so you can count on me divesting of a pile of stuff via the TB classified in short order.

I don’t recall ever having that issue on the SCR-DI, but it has been awhile since I’ve had one. Didn’t notice this as an issue on the SGT-DI.

That’s one thing I was a little disappointed about - I wanted to be able to blend the cab with the regular preamp signal like I can in both the older SVX software and the HX Stomp. Not a deal breaker.

Interesting! I can see uses for both options. Maybe Ampeg could have implemented two knobs, a blend and a cab level? I have to say I *think* If I had to choose one I'm glad they went with Cab Level.

I'm not sure on this and haven't thought it through but could you technically route the Thru -> the Mono Aux in and use the Aux level and cab level knobs as a make-shift blend between the two signals?
Does the Aux in get run through the pedal or direct to the out? and which outputs? those are RTFM questions, but I just haven't looked haha.

It here!

A few comparison pics. BTW, the SGT-DI is a bit lighter.

Now down to the music room. Brief update later today.

Well, I’m french so I can chime in. Despite the fact they wanted to translate “The All-in-one Bass Box”, they botched it. “Le caisson de basse”, in french, is indeed a subwoofer. To translate “bass box” as in a pedal…. Then I’d use something like “le boitier pour bassistes”, aka the box for bassists. Or “la pedale pour bassists”.

Bass box just doesn’t translate word for word.

I bet they chose a French Canadian to do the French on the box...;-) "Le Box De Bass" was a little too obvious... Va t'allez dans ma Jeep pour obtenier L'Hotdog?" :roflmao:

We had a few French speakers from Paris in our workplace taking calls for our Quebec clients. Neither could understand each other.

Dumb question: do you need to use the included ac adapter, or can you use any standard pedalboard power supply, as long as it’s 9v center negative and at least 500mA?

I don't have mine in hand yet, but I fully intend to hook it up to my 1 Spot Pro in the 500mA slot...

I can't imagine a company like Ampeg (or really any in this day and age) making the power supply completely proprietary.

I do have mine and the one-spot works perfect, no issues at all, original power supply is still nestled in the box. I DO appreciate them sending it though. I WILL use it as a travel power supply so I can leave all existing power supply setups in place, grab this pedal and go!

The confirmation is much appreciated!

Another question for you... Do you know if the SVT/B15 voice selection only applies when the SGT circuit is on? Or does it change the voice of the entire preamp even when it's not?
