Ampeg SGT-DI

My current pedalboard consists of a TC Electronic tuner -> Keeley Bassist comp -> Darkglass VMT -> SansAmp BDDI V2.

I feel like this Ampeg SGT could get me in the same territory, in less footprint, all I’d need is to throw it in my gigbag with a tuner instead of carrying my pedalboard…. Interesting, will probably give it a try!

I'm similar with a Keeley Bassist comp -> Darkglass VMT -> SCR-DI.

I wonder if there's more flexibility in my current setup. I have a feeling that the 1 knob compressor on the SGT isn't going to be flexible enough for me, and I like the multiple controls for dirt on the VMT.

But I do like the cab sims and sweepable mids on the new SGT! Perhaps I can sell something else and then have it all!

I’m not too fussed on compression, I like the Keeley because it’s easy to use and doesn’t color the sound. If that one knob comp is easy, straightforward and sounds ok, I’ll be happy with it.

I wish the SGT-DI had a non-ampeg-ish sound option - more like a bassman. I'm surprised that you can't switch to some favorites.

You're joking, right? Why would Ampeg release a product that sounded like anything but an Ampeg? They've been coasting on the legend of the B-15 and SVT for an awful long time. At least they still make SVTs!

I do exclusively home recording at this point in my musicianship, and I thank Ampeg for releasing SVT Suite before releasing this fine looking piece of gear.

Yes if you only use it for recording you could as well buy software instead of the pedal. Brainworx also has a good B15 emulation. I bought it for 20$ in a sale. They also have a SVT emulation. Plugin Alliance has a sale right now (no affiliation)!

I had my mind set on getting an Origin Fx Bass Rig Vintage this year but the more I look into the features of this unit, the more I think this is the perfect ampeg-in-a-box solution. It offers the same as the Origin unit and much more. First, it offers more cab options, 6 in total (3 factory + 3 user imported). Second, it offers more eq-wise with the parametric mids. Third, you have the option between SVT and B15 voicing in the grit zone AND you have a footswitch to turn it on and off. Fourth, you have a compressor built in. And last, you have so many connection options that suit most scenarios that you face as a bassplayer.
Man, this looks better the more I get into it. Well done, Ampeg. Well done.

I think this pedal is going to be a big hit. Sounds really good, is simple to use (no menu diving of other modelers). Would like to see more brands do modeling pedals this way. That said the more I listen to the demos the more it makes me lean towards pulling the trigger on the origin effects vintage bass rig. Interesting thing is I don’t think the origin effects is as good as an amp in a box as the ampeg. But I like the clean tone I get from my mesa subway rig. I’m not personally looking for a mainly clean amp in a box. What I really want is that cranked Tim Commerford type of drive. And when it comes to that specific task from what I hear I think the vintage bass rig will better suite what I’m looking for. Right at the beginning of this video Ian demonstrates the rage against the machine setting for the origin. I didn’t hear the ampeg get that kind of sound at all in any of the demos I watched.

The Ampeg does have a few important things that the Capo is missing, especially the cab simulation. Also the Capo is 100$ more expensive I think. I don’t know if the Capo is better or better sounding? Would be nice to see a comparison video.

Yeah, I think a deep and fair comparison with this, the Capo, origin vintage bass rig, shift line olympic, noble, darkglass vintage ultra, crucial tone nugget, Arkham Oracle, and maybe the ol' Tech21 VT Bass deluxe would put a lot of debates to bed, then just add the shiny new thing each time.

Good luck affording that one, though! Haha

Took some searching but found the dimensions [owners manual] and the SGT-DI looks slightly larger than the SCR-DI footprint. But should still fit my no-rig board, and home practice board.

2.5 x 7.4 x 4.9 inches / 65 x 189 x 126 mm (with side panel knobs recessed, no rubber feet applied)
2.5 x 7.9 x 4.9 inches / 65 x 201 x 126 mm (with side panel knobs extended, no rubber feet applied)

Ampeg themselves have their own plug-in suite, as well, but the PA/brainworks Ampeg stuff is stellar. An Ampeg plug-in was his first plug-in!

I think they missed the boat by not putting a tube in it. My Audient Sono interface has a tube and cab sims, as does the ReVolt by TwoNotes. Granted, they don’t do the Ampeg “thing,” I have a Tech 21 VT Bass DI for that. I may sell it after I get the Motown Bass DI.

I posted in another thread that if Ampeg reworked the SCR by ditching the Scrambler circuit and adding a tube they could be on to one of the best DIs on the market. That was before i saw this though, I really wanna get my hands on one and compare it to my PF50T into my DAW.

I feel there could be some real bargains for SCRDIs on the 2nd hand market if someone is looking for a headphone/practice amp!
