Ampeg SGT-DI

My crazy journey:
  • Used a VT Bass for years, then tried the SGT.
  • Liked the clean tone of the SGT just a bit better but too many other cons for me so returned it.
  • Saw a video comparing the SGT to a BassRig SV, thought the BassRig SV sounded way better.
  • Tried a BassRig SV and sounds so much better than the VT Bass - its my new DI!
So for me the SGT was a gateway from the VT Bass to the BassRig SV

I actually thought that the BassRig sounded better also (maybe the same video)? Just had more heft to the tone. Real world is usually different though.

well the comparison video he ran them both “flat eq”. But of course they are not really flat and are voiced differently. Playing with the EQ I can get whatever I need out of either and I can get them to sound closer if I want. Close enough that I’m confident you can’t tell ( or at least don’t care) in a mix.
The origin is much faster for me to dial in in a live setting because it just has less settings and it kind of is voiced already close to my sound. The SGT takes a bit more to ensure the three gain levels are playing nice across the pedal.
I wasn’t happy with the SGT until I switched away from the 8x10 cabsim. It’s very dark. It’s probably accurate to the real thing as I wouldn’t know, but the 2x12 really suits me better.

For the past few months, I've been trying to find a way to get the Origin Effects pedal but it's so damn expensive! Then the SGT came out. I have the SCR-DI but I thought maybe this new pedal could be it for me since it's much cheaper and so many of you love it. After hearing the comparison, I think the O. E. might be slightly better for me. I'd love to see a comparison video between the SGT and SCR.

I have both but I’m not set up to record. I absolutely hated the scrambler circuit. It was always too much drive and at the wrong frequencies (fizzy?) for my taste and when dialed back to the point where it was ok it was just the same to me to disable that circuit.

however the dynamic response and tone of the grit section in the SGT is completely different and I really like it. The origin is also fantastic.
I’d put the origin sv and the ampeg SGT in the top five ever and the SCR wouldn’t even break the top 20.

But who knows you may like it better. Lots of people like the SCR. I’m not one of them.

I own and enjoy both SCR & SGT. The SCR is one dimensional but great for silent practice, where the SGT has many more tonal options and more studio/ live stage friendly. The Scrambler section is certainly lacking but I get usable tones out of the Scrambler pedal. The SGT section sounds much better in comparison and looking forward to recording with it soon. The SCR is nice, the SGT sounds better with more options.

I still haven't played around with the IR loader, but for me the SGT sounds best with cabsim off completely. But I do agree that the 2x12 is the best sounding one of all the pre-loads it comes with.

This is exactly where I'm at with the cab sims as well. I did tinker with the Loader and put three of my own aftermarket IRs in there and liked them even better than the User cab sims, but I still find myself leaving the cab sim block off completely.

I did remember to use the preamp bypass input on my amp at rehearsal this week, and it seems like a much more fair test of course, despite still having some coloration due to running through my PF115HE rehearsal cab. The Tone Hammer seems to have a warmer overall sound. But there's still a slight bit more noticeable weight in the SGT low end, particularly with the SGT circuit engaged.

The EQ points of the bass controls on both preamps are at 40Hz, so I think what it comes down to is maybe just "The Aguilar Sound" vs "The Ampeg Sound."

Splitting hairs, I think. Both are really good preamps. Rolling with the SGT for now though, as I like the additional controls of the Ampeg and how they implemented the Level control on the SGT circuit.

My band was off for a couple weeks, so looking forward to finally trying out the SGT through my band's IEM/PA setup for the gig this weekend.

5sg.

Well, I had two SCR-DI pedals because, at the time, they captured the Ampeg sound pretty well. I can tell you though, after getting my hands on an SDT-DI, the sound as compared to the SCR-DI is like night and day! The latter is lightyears better IMHO.

About the compressor on the SGT-DI, that only makes sense when using it as a stand alone pedal, correct? I will use the SGT on the last position in my pedal chain, preceded by 5-6 tuner/ dirt/ wah/ modulation pedals. And probably still a separate compressor at the begin of the chain.
