Ampeg SGT-DI

Hi all,

Looking for opinions

I am looking at either getting the SGT DI or the classic preamp pedal plus scrambler pedal. My question is has anyone played both and how do they compare? I am looking for the ampeg sound but mostly for a clean tone with mild drive. I don't need the cab sim or compression. Is the SGT DI worth the extra cost for what I'm looking for?
Absolutely get the SGT. It’s well worth it over the Classic.

YES! I don't really use the cab sims, except experimenting during home practice. And much like the [for the most part useless] Scrambler section on the SCR-DI, where I use the Scrambler pedal instead, I prefer the separate and more adjustable Ampeg OptoComp pedal vs the compressor on the SGT-DI. I have no history w/ the preamp pedal.

The SGT-DI can produce glorious Ampeg clean tones which I've really enjoyed in the studio. The SGT section can add just a touch of drive to full out grind. The SGT-DI will give you many many more tonal options than the preamp pedal, IMHO. Not to mention a DI, aux in, etc.

I was all set to move on my SGT DI from my first impressions but I'm glad I didn't. Once dialled in it's one of the best sounds I've had for that valvey picked P bass rock tone. Currently using SVT setting, Ultra Lo on with all EQ around 1 o clock. I also like the onboard compressor for this vibe which peaks occasionally. No cab sim. SGT is set at 9 o clock and level matched against the OFF setting. P bass heaven. Not quite as nice as a multitude of tubes at the sweet spot but I'd take the pedal (or Venture amp) and be pretty happy. A niggle is the low output DI.

I am thinking of using the SGT-DI with Markbass LM2, which I've discovered the Effects Return is pre-EQ.
I think the LittleMark is neutral by reputation, but will having the signal still go through the EQ color the sound from the Ampeg unit?
I'm trying to get as much Ampegness as I can, and the SGT unit is pricey for me.

I’m interested to hear about how people are setting the cab sim level and impressions about sonic results — generally I’ve been setting it at about 50% but I like to know from more experimental types any techniques or tips.

I’ve had trouble with keeping the cab Sim from clipping unless I turn it down far enough that it really really doesn’t do much to the sound. As a result, I generally just keep it off.

After 11 months of owning SGT-DI, I've sold it. I'm unable to use the super grit effectively and when its on, it makes the tone sound bloated. Although there are EQ controls, I still find it hard to dial the perfect sound. I think I need a separate low-mid and hi-mid controls. Finally, by itself, you won't be able to create a hard rock or metal sound. The built-in compressor is nice though, it saves from you carrying another pedal.
Do you like to know what I replaced it with?

How does the SGT DI handle hot basses? I have an MTD passive 5 and the B string clips my DP3-X.
I have passive basses (in particular a squier rascal bass) that hit the SGT hard enough that the SGT gain knob set to zero isn’t clean. My solution is to put a compressor in front and mainly just reduce the make up gain below unity for that bass and for other basses turn it back up. An input pad switch would have been nice.

for active it depends on if you are boosting a bunch I suppose, but the SGT is easy to overload the front of. (I have one and I like it a lot).

Any experience with stacking pedals with the SGT-DI? In my experience I really like the clean sound of SGT-DI and like many others I don't like the SGT circuit but the sweet spot seems to be around 8-9 o'clock for me.

I'm thinking of getting a darkglass pedal to add to my pedalboard and was wondering if this will be a good addition? Still new to this whole pedal thing so if others have similar setup do give advice! I've read somewhere that the SGT is best used as standalone pedal but I'm not sure

Thanks!

I think the SGT takes effects really well. I'm currently running a Darkglass B3K into my SGT.

I will say I'm going to transition to the Earthquaker Blumes here shortly, but that's because I've discovered I'm not a huge fan of the Darkglass "flavor" of overdrive/distortion; it has nothing to do with how it interacts with the SGT.
