Ampeg sound in one rackspace preamp!

What's your opinion on the SansAmp stuff?

While Tech21 strives to emulate a generally comfortable tube amp sound, there is a "Tech21 sound" all its own that I'd categorize as tight low-end and big punchy mids with highs that range from round to sharp. Other than perhaps the VT, I don't necessarily think a SansAmp is going to sound like an Ampeg. If anything, they're closer to sounding like a Sunn than an Ampeg. When I see a band live, I can more often than not tell if the bass player is using a SansAmp, because they have a signature recognizable sound to my ears.

I'd check out Kevin Shaw's preamp. Kindof pricey, but it's like a B15 without the sag, and the highest fidelity around. A bit like B15 meets Millenia. I own the full-on amp based on this---it's the best tube gear I've ever heard. (four KT88's---I'm going to try KT120's)

Glad you love that thing! I never fell in love with her, her bottom was too big for me!! XD

The paraDI is not your thing—but it is great with a piezo pickup or even a single coil passive P-bass, IMHO.
