Ampeg stack?

What the hell is going on here? Most everyone ( in their own experience) had troubles with the mixture of a 410 and a 115 including myself which is why I'm going to follow the advice of all who commented about this. Again, regardless of what Ampeg says everyone had trouble INCLUDING ME!

The main purpose in the scheme of things was to have a 115 he portaflex flip top for just the convenience of it for smaller applications and have it as part of a bigger rig with the 410, a 2fer if you will, BUT we all know that's not a good thing to do.

And that's that. Again thank you to all. I'm new here , just joined a couple of days ago. This is a community of people who share the same interests and help , advise, and encourage in a friendly manner. Correct???

Welcome to TalkBass, Ox! Shiz be gettin' deep quick 'round here...especially when you dance with the devil known as "mixed drivers". :roflmao:

LMFAO!!!!

It's all good here, I think you'll find.

You just happened to touch the "Third rail of Talkbass", mixed drivers.

Now, start a thread having anything to do with Rickenbacker, and sit back and watch the fireworks!!

Lol! I think I'm outta here. Damn! I'm here 10 minutes and stepped on the 3rd rail?

LOL! Stick around, it's a good place with some very knowledgeable people, even the cranky ones. As for the third rail, there was no way for you to know, really, which is usually the case.

I'll give you another tip:

If you are thinking about switching to flats, and want to know what people here think, search for old threads on the topic. Alternately - hang back and wait a day or two, SOMEBODY will ask the question for you. Every week.

What's up with Rics? I gotta hear this.

Wow - that alone would be an awesome thread subject. I bet that would run ten pages or more!! :bassist::bassist:

Here is a recent example, lots of fun:

Jeez!

Wall of tens = structural damage.
Nah, it's generating a very large even wavefront that acts up to around 700-800Hz (1/2 of wavelength beween source centers).
If I had the choice (2x810) then I would except comb filtering "issues" beyond 1kHz as a tradeoff.

There are approved "single" driver cab designs out there that suffer on "steady" comb filter effects a very lot of, but as these mechanism are widely unknown to average (arm chair) engineers even stacking of those "matchin" cabs remains uncared.
Fortunatelly BFM didn't tell "explicitely" anything about this cab design at TB, so these cabs take an "exceptional" position at TB although these producing lots of "issues".
That's sad!

I'm pretty sure my EV eliminator top+sub provides way better dispersion in the vertical plane, provides more of low end and top end response, way better balanced total response, way better dispersion in the horizontal plane, less of THD, etc etc
but I'm not sure which one of both makes more fun :D
Don't let you upset.

Btw most issues with comb filtering issues I do experience with MI cabs in the vertical plane rather than horizontal plane. "Skinny" matched stacking can't prevent from "vertical" comb issues in this regard

I'm not upset at all.....i never use 2 cabs, but did run them both out of curiosity. my gawd, thunderous....no-one ever says my tone is anemic. Back on topic, i've tried the mixed cab approach and ran a bi-amped Trace 1810 with a 410 on top, but since i went svt its all 10's, i find 15's aren't fast enough so out they went. In a different rig i use a vintage traynor yrm1 with an EV 15 in a braced/vented bassman ext cab. It sounds glorious with a jazz bass.

I am thinking about getting the pf800 and running it through a hartke410 and a pf115. I know it will sound good with the 410 but I'm curious as to what the opinions are on the 115. I have not seen many conversations regarding the 115. Help?

I probably wouldn't mix the two. As for opinions, I've not played the PF115lf, but I used to have a couple PF115he's. Great sounding cabs that go a little too low for my tastes.

That's really weird and coincidental because I just bought the PF 800 head and hooked it up to a 410 and 115 and it sounded great as long as your impedance is correct. I'm probably going to open a Pandora's box with this comment, but the truth must be told. My original "main rig" was a Hartke 500 watt head driving a Hartke 410 and a 115 and it worked well but when I pushed it hard it would fart out but lower volume it was ok. Today, I traded in all the Hartke stuff and got the Ampeg PF 410 hlf and a PF 115he and it's AMAZING matched with the PF 800 head. I've done extensive research on doing this and a lot of Q&A ( a little before this thread but a lot more after). The conclusion is , it's all good! As long as impedance levels are matched as the equipment calls for it works perfectly fine (410 and 115 together). The folks at Ampeg, electronic specialist' as well as notable artists use this set up. Victor Wootin also uses and endorses a rig which consists of a 410 and 115cabinets. Bottom line is, this set up is absolutely KILLER! A nice separation of highs and lows and dynamic power. The PF 800 head will dish out 800 watts with a 4 ohm load. Two 8 ohm cabs hooked up to it equal a 4 ohm load . It's works and it's a great combo...

Well I must compliment you on your exquisite taste in bass amp manufacturers at the very least :D And if that cab combo works for you, it's all good. It's not that you can't find non-matching cab setups that work well. It's more about the unpredictable nature of mixing cabs. Some manufacturers do put some time in making sure their different cabs of a given line will work well with each other. But using non-matching cabs can cause unpredictable phase relationships and imbalances of power distribution, not to mention that an EQ for one cab may not work very well with the other. And the only way to truly tell if it works is by gigging on it, which means spending money. I am more conservative when it comes to cabs both for the money reason and the potential of unpredictability. But if your rig is doing it for you, then it's doing it for you and all that science stuff doesn't matter.
