Ampeg SVP-Pro no sound

Hey all,

I recently purchased a used SVP-Pro Preamp and it's not putting out any sound, at all. The peak/mute light doesn't light up at all in response to a signal. I've tried two different basses (verified they are not the problem by running them direct into my poweramp), different cables, every combination of buttons, etc. Nada.

I popped open the top, just to take a look for anything obvious since I don't really know what I'm looking for under there. Everything looked ok but the tubes didn't seem to be lighting/heating up at all. It seems to be a power issue at this point.

I'm probably going to take it to my repair guy unless there's something obvious I'm missing and I can fix it otherwise.

Regrettably this is not the sort of thing that can be diagnosed "long distance". Have you double-checked that the power cord is good; that it is plugged in; and that the unit is switched on? No insult is intended, it's just that a lot of the time there's the culprit. :)

I've forgotten whether the SVP's have an external fuse door or not. Look on the back near the power receptacle and see if there is a black plastic rectangle with wattage markings on it, usually attached by a couple of screws. That's a fuse door--remove it and the fuse will be inside. Pull the fuse out and hold it up to the light, you should be able to see whether the fiber inside is intact or broken.

If there's no fuse door, remove the whole top panel of the unit. The fuse should be back near the power jack.

Does ANYTHING light up?

There are two fuses, and a wire harness between the back board and the main portion of the unit. Problems with those can cause the unit to not work.

It is also possible that the transformer was overloaded at some point, possibly by wrong fuses, which could mean it is bad. it is a custom-made one, and I have no clue if Loud will have any. My guess is that they don't, they literally threw away huge amounts of factory stock several years ago.
