Ampeg SVT 7 Pro Club

I just put a tung sol in my SVT-7... nice vintagey sound with lots of headroom... a little high end roll off compared to the original JJ, but fixed it by cranking the trebles from 12 o'clock to about 1 to 2 o'clock. It is less muddy for sure. I practiced with the band tonight with that tube in it and it did the job nicely !!
If you don't mind a lot of reading, this thread is nice as some people tried a lot of different tubes and there is some sound samples:

Personnally I tried:
- the JJ ECC83S (original tube, sounds nice but a bit muddy IMO especialy if you want to drive the highs. nice output)
- tung-sol 12ax7 (a bit of high end roll off, but lots of output and headroom)
- electro-harmonix 12AX7 (Cleaner lows with nice sparkling drive in the highs, mids so-so, not the highest output)
- groove tube 12ax7C (nice high and mids, less low end and output a bit)
They all sound different... for now the tung sol is in it... Ideally I'd like a tung sol kind, but with more high end top... If you have some tube to propose to achieve this I'll be happy to try !!
I have a newish, though I am the 2nd owner, tube amp, (with a 5 year transferable warranty), in the most highly recommended shop now for 3 weeks and a few days. I called today and they told me it is "on the bench" and phone calls are going back and forth with the manufacturer.
That means no solution part has been shipped by the manufacturer yet. That means I might get it back in my hands fixed after about a month and a half or so if I am lucky. This is the greater SF bay area where every third person owns an electric guitar or bass and an amp. YMMV
Try a NOS Japanese Raytheon. Comparing the V1 JJ in my Heritage SVT-CL's pre to the Raytheon, that's almost exactly what I got out of it...that kind of output + more highs. Didn't seem like a lot of extra highs when I sat there and listened to them, but on a gig it was too much high end, so I went back to the JJ.
He already sold it without any problemsAnyhow, is it me or does the 7 Pro really create a load of hiss ?
Mine does but I am over it. Ampeg customer response actually told me they don't add some filtration that some manufacturers do, because it would also filter good stuff. I don't care because I play in loud bands and don't use amp heads during solo practice. Who really knows. Svt7pro is a great sounding hybrid head, and if my C00 keeps on tickin I will dig it. If it dies suddenly I will have a back up. It might be only my back up as I am trying all tube amps this year
I actually had a moment today related to my post in this thread re my newish tube amp. Jimmy's experience is similar to my SF Bay one. You are at least a month out when you drop an amp off for repair in major metropolitan areas. Why, cause lots of different manufacturers products have little failures during warranty or beyond, as well as routine maintenance stuff like retube and bias etc.
There are no "never needs repair units" on the planet.
That having been said we need a JD Powers type rating agency for amps, so we can see which ones are in the shop the least. The svt7pro was on roger waters tour so somebody thought it was pretty good.
There was a recent link video on TB where the bass tech for Greenday said Mike Dirnt was a contributor to the design of the Fender Super Bassman 300. He also mentioned they take 3 of them on tour. Good planning.

2nd one ive bought and I am done searching for a better head. Done.....Maybe some different cabs and on board active pre amps are the only thing ill be trying in the near future...I LOVE my 7pro soooo much. Ask TommyDaCat....I got him into one after he grew tired of carrying an old 4Pro around forever.

Those Tung Sols are also my 1st choice to replace the JJ. I also see on a site where they sell them that they have 12AX7/ECC803 Gold Balanced, 12AX7/ECC83 balanced, regular 12AX7/ECC83, 12AX7/ECC83 gold balanced, 12AX7/ECC83 high gain, etc. What's all the difference ?
I just recently got one of these lovely amps! I pair it with an Ampeg 610 HLF Cabinet and it sounds monstrous

Has anyone tried a Golden Lion? I had one and it sounded good but it seemd to make a big POP if I struck the strings hard so not sure if it was going Microphonic put the original in it.

I'd try to find some Raytheon around. That would be nice if they would have kept the lows and mids response of the tung sol but with extra highs... Do they cost a lot ?? Lots of poeple around talks about mullards, but they seem hard to find or expensive... My goal is to find that tube that will give me the sound I want without having to mess much with the eq on the amp.Otherwise if I can't find some other around at a decent price I'll may keep the tung sol and still crank the highs on my svt7... That worked well last practice with the band, with fresh strings on my bass. They are not so far from the truth !!

I paid $25 ea. a month ago for two NOS Raytheons. They were made on old Mullard equipment, too. Obviously they're not Mullardshey thanks !!

but they're good tubes...they just weren't right in my HSVT.Did you see if it maybe a fuse in it? I know it may sound as if im not aware if our amps use one,they are class D. Maybe its inside? Ive not had to look.
But,it maybe the Golden Lion,mine as mentioned went microphonic WAY too fast...Not good for a $40 12ax7 IMO. Any knowledge of premature 7pro death because of what 12ax7 you prefer?????

Some Fostex horns just come that way IME,prolly the cabs cross over not getting along with your EQ settings on your bass or something else weird. Try other basses,cables,and locations yet?
