Ampeg SVT 7 Pro - the known "cutting out" issue

Selling price was $500. I knew of the potential for issue ahead of time (I buy and sell used all the time, and was aware of the potential for this issue on this model). What I didn't realize was the prevalence. Oh well, not the end of the world.

It's frustrating, yes, that what I may end up paying would have in fact bought me new retail. Some you win, some you lose.

Good to hear that those running Rev C00 are having good luck. I'll probably just swap out the main board and be on my way.

110% correct attitude! :)

I read the original post and skimmed through the replies, maybe it was answered, but I'll give my story.

I had a revision A00 (00A, I don't remember, it was the one that is known to have problems). I played it with an Ashdown 8ohm ABM 410 a lot, never had an issue, even when I pushed it on a 100+degree day.

I did a tour with another band and since we were sharing a van, the bassist of the other band offered to let me use his cab, it was an Acoustic 810 (the newer ones).

The amp cut out like crazy with this cab, like 3 or 4 times each gig. When I got home, plugged it back into my Ashdown, never had an issue.

I took it to an Ampeg dealer and told them, they did a retrofit for me. Never had a problem since.

I ended up selling the head to a friend, he's never mentioned any issues.

I know Ampeg gets a lot of heat on this forum, heck I don't think i'll own an Ampeg ever again, because there is much better out there. But with this individual situation, Loud was very good with taking care of me.

good for you if you can take this attitude about this situation. I'm surprised that you would have bought this amp knowing about the potential cutting-out issue on the early A rev. But, as you also say, you buy and sell used gear all the time, presumably on the web, so it must come with the territory. It would personally drive me bats**t, but that's just me.

FYI, This guy showed up on another TB thread recently - AmpegGuy - with the title of Director Of Social Networking for Loud Technology. Maybe send him a PM and see if he might help. The web is a very interesting place and you may be able to parley the TB audience exposure to get a slightly better outcome than above. Certainly couldn't hurt Loud's reputation if they went a bit above and beyond for a member of TB. We get very appreciative and positively vocal when a Manufacturer treats us well.

good luck

Well gang, I was just referred to this thread because I have a brand new "Rev C"....in the box unsued that I am trying to sell for $675.00 (shipping included) in the "amps for sale" section of talkbass forum. And for the sake of full disclosure, Yes, it is a replacement head. I bought a unit almost "brand new" from a sponsored player through e-bay. It was a studio amp and he used it for recording and AMPEG demos. Long story short, he finally got Loud Tech. to send me a brand new unit after their customer service dept. was unsympathetic to me...he is a stand-up guy...but does not play stand-up bass..haha. All this even after Loud confirmed that my problem amp was only 16 months old. One of their brilliant customer service reps replied to my complaint about "standing behind their product" with a pithy, "I don't know dude, we are selling the heck out of them". Since I was not sure what the outcome would be, I purchased an Ashdown. Then one day I came home and there she was on my doorstep, a brand new SVT7-PRO. It is a shame to experience that after you save to buy your first Ampeg...my old Hartke was incredibly sturdy..never had an issue. The SVT7-PRO sounds fantastic and is an easy unit to cart around. The problem with my first unit was that the output transistors burned up. So any brave souls out there? I have the invoice and have never opened the box. I may be willing to negotiate!

Did he/she really say those words? Was it followed by an apology/explanation? I know it's just an individual, but it doesn't make me feel great about Loud's support of their products.

What was the Rev level of the amp that failed?

They sent him a new one. What more do you want? Blood?

No, they did not send me a new one! They sent their "sponsored pro" a new one after about 6 weeks of back and forth and him making calls from Europe while touring. And he had it shipped to my address telling them he would pick it up there when he got back stateside....he is the hero in this story.

They asked me for my invoice, and i explained, the situation, purchased on e-bay. At the time, I did not know the seller was a sponsored player. He was not involved yet. Loud said the could not help me. I gave them the serial number and the guy said, yeah it's about 18 months old. Then I said, "how can you leave me hanging like this..it's my first AMPEG and I paid a lot of money for it. Aren't the under a 5 year warranty?". He said sorry, that is our policy. Then I said something along the lines of, "I can't believe I got stuck with this Chinese piece of junk"! That is when he made the comment about selling a lot of them. It really soured me, I have to say. I sold my Ampeg 8X10 cab and am an Ashdown guy now. LOVE THEM! ABM EVOIII 900Watt.

Not sure what Rev it was as I had no knowledge of previous problems nor what questions to ask. I will take the "blood" though.....True Blood is back on HBO!

Wow

Cool, you lucked out - maybe sale it on the TB classified.

Buying Ampeg before the "idiot" left, and now, are like gambling (You may get lucky or not).

I also had a SVT-7 Pro ( Rev C), that I bought last December. I had it for a couple of weeks and had only used if for reahearsals, when suddenly out of the blue it wouldn't power up. Ampeg sent me a new one (another Rev C), and I have used it on numerous gigs with no prob. On one recent gig, however, the power faded in and out momentarily and then came back. Not sure what it was, but it certaingly gave me that sinking feeling. For all I know it could have been a power sag, but can't be certain. I am just going to play the heck out of it and see if it does it again before the warranty runs out. That sucks that I have to worry about that !!! :scowl:

First off, the warranty is 2 years on their SMPS amps, not 5. Second, it IS their policy...it clearly states that their warranties aren't transferable on their webpage. Do I think they should change that? Yes, but the burden of researching stuff like that is on the buyer. All they can do is publish it somewhere on their website.

Now, have I seen them violate that warranty policy in the interest of good will? Yes I have. You got them to violate that warranty policy, too, and got a brand new amp to replace your old one. Yes, it took 6 weeks, but the thing you aren't realizing is it was out of warranty and a CS person can't do anything about it. Only a manager can do it.

But whatever...keep pretending that they didn't step up for you if it makes you feel better. I think they went above and beyond, quite frankly. And so did your buddy who has the deal.

This proves to me that I could never work CS...I don't have the patience to deal with people who want out of warranty used gear replaced for free ;)
