Ampeg SVT 7 Pro - the known "cutting out" issue

So if you buy a used Ampeg you should not be upset if it fails?

After all no one around hear has ever purchased a piece of used gear. :D

If there appears to be a model that has more problems than others you should ___________?

I also had a SVT-7 Pro ( Rev C), that I bought last December. I had it for a couple of weeks and had only used if for reahearsals, when suddenly out of the blue it wouldn't power up. Ampeg sent me a new one (another Rev C), and I have used it on numerous gigs with no prob. On one recent gig, however, the power faded in and out momentarily and then came back. Not sure what it was, but it certaingly gave me that sinking feeling. For all I know it could have been a power sag, but can't be certain. I am just going to play the heck out of it and see if it does it again before the warranty runs out. That sucks that I have to worry about that !!! :scowl:

Hmm, I could be wrong but I have a feeling compared to the thousands of (rev c) 7pros sold there aren’t a lot of bad ones. I also feel really bad for the manufacture because it cost them tons of money to get a product to market and if they get hit with low sells or a design failure that can really hurt and sometime even kill a company. For example, sometime checkout the history of the automotive industry. btw, Toyota USA, is gambling and risking everything they have on a model right now. Anyway, the OP was helped and I hope your amp keeps kicking booty for many years and Srax63 finds a buyer and everything workouts for everyone. :cool:

Due to me being on my last legs with this place, I can't give you the answer I'd really like to say for question 1. But it merely serves as a way to bait me into getting myself perm banned with its irrelevance.

And to answer your second question, you should vote with your dollars. However, I'm waiting for the proof that this model has more problems than others of its kind relative to the amount of units sold. I know plenty of folks who have had zero problems with their 7 Pros, and I don't know of a single amp maker who has never had an amp break on them.

Hey I really like the amp and it has worked great up until that one gig. I hope that fade out was just power sag. I just have to take a spare bass head just like I take spare strings. Peace of mind is priceless.

Jimmy I do fully understand how you feel. I get my knuckles rapped often around here and I believe this site has made major strides in becoming politically correct. I do not want to incite you but I do find some of this curious.


I believe these Rev A amps should have been recalled though this is just my little ol opinion.

Warranties should cover revisions. "free from defects in materials and workmanship" if it has been revised it has a defect. You should be entitled to a fix.

Even if you don't have a problem in real life, you should be able to send it in before the warranty expires and get the revisions.

I know other warranties work just like this.
But I'm no lawyer. I don't know why Ampeg would be different.

Of course one should be upset if ur amp fails-any amp.
I don't like the CS guys comment much either, but CS is a stressful position & monkeys escape sometimes.
Ampeg's warranty IS clearly stated & I, for one, knew about it prior to purchasing a rev C 7 Pro. Maybe I gambled -I bought mine from the USA & I'm in Aus- I know that IF mine gets any problem within 2 yrs, I'll have to pay postage to US & them get the warranty fix.
I knew all this b4 I bought (thanks to TB mostly) & it was worth it to me.
My 7 Pro's been 100% reliable & with anything made these days, I take a back up. That ain't no slight on the Ampeg, just how the world is these days. Sucks, but.
If you wants fanatic quality, you CAN still get it, but, you must pay!!!
The 7 pro is a great deal as is virtually any modern Class D amp.
500 + watts for $500 ??
Even 10 yrs ago we couldn't get that

There also appears to be some issues with Rev C so I'm not sure all this is finished. I'm thinking we are going to see more of this.

I have been saddened by all of this.

I was a died in the wool Ampeg man. I had outgrown my SVT 3Pro and 4x10HLF. I needed more power and less mid scoop (from the cab). I had money in hand and went seeking. All the units I tried went up in smoke as soon as I turned them on. I went to more than one dealer and had this experience. I was really frustrated as I did not know which direction to go and man did I go in some directions. All these were Vietnam make.

I would like to have another Ampeg at some point. I think an SVT VR and matching 8x10 would be nice. I believe these folks took the holy grail and turned it into something else. Hopefully they will get some of this under control at some point. Jimmy says the cabs are spot on so I'm not as worried about that.

I think the bottom line is everybody gets their components from china now, and every company is going to have problems with what is otherwise an excellent design.
What they do about the problems and complaints is the main issue for me. I am a local player who does it for fun and beers, music bliss hangin with my band buds and fans and actually get over a hundred bucks some private gigs"woo hoo!" Other gigs not so. I am not trying to be any endorsing artist. I have no interest in the motel life on tour to states where they still smoke in the clubs, etc. I don't have a dog in the fight. I am impressed by companies that respond to the smallest of issues. I will keep buying from the company that sent me a return label when I told them I could not hear anything in the headphone out function of my new amp from an authorized dealer. Oh by the way it was the president of the company who asked me for my e-mail! They fixed it and would do so again. I have seen other instances where that company fixed 15 dollar preamp tube issues.

The Warranty on SVT is 5 Years for Electronics and 2 years for speakers. Sounds like Jimmy needs to do some research.

And they did not step up for me...they stepped up for one of their "promotional players" who in turn STEPPED up for me. Huge difference.

I just want gear that works. i have spent my whole life playing guitars and basses through Peavey's, Mesa Boogies, Rolands, Fender and Hartke amps with no problems that tubes or a fuse could not fix. All the while, thinking AMPEG was the cream of the crop...well it just aint so.

If I buy a 1 1/2 year old BMW vs a 1 1/2 year old Dodge, i have different expectations.

OK, you're right. I thought the 2 year warranty was for all SMPS powered amps but it's not for the 7 Pro. OK, standing corrected. But it was still used and out of warranty and you got a new one within 6 weeks. However you got it, you got it. But your mind is made up and I'm not going try to talk you into appreciating it. Nobody can please everybody...not even me ;)

Someone bought it, hated it, thought it was defective, etc, it was returned and the retailer stuck it back on the shelf for the next victim.

There may be nothing wrong, OR it may cut out like crazy, hiss, buzz, whatever.

The question to you is " how much is the risk that it won't work or needs repair worth in lower cost?" Often restocks are sold cheap as "no return privilege, repair only". But not always.

With all the 15%-off coupons for July 4th this weekend, IMHO I would suggest buying a new one for $680 with 45-days to return, a 5-year warranty, no shipping, and likely no state tax.

You will have to call "them" on the phone to consummate this deal because Ampeg items are usually excluded from such promotions, but trust me, they will do it for you (as they did for me.)

I hear ya Jimmy, but you are missing the point brother. I do appreciate that I got another AMP...which i plan to sell. But not becasue of Ampeg, but because of what the other guy did for me...I appreciate him! Ampeg only stepped up because he told them it was his unit...even after they acknowledged to me on the phone that the unit was less than two years old! That would fall within the warranty period for any of their products. Sooooo...they do not stand behind their products. Very simple conclusion.

So, "if" you work hard for your money and you are getting ready to buy pre-owned, because you have limited funds, AND you want a quality product, you want feedback on what to purchase. You look for the feedback of other players to share their experiences. That is why Talkbass forums are so great. Ding, Ding.....I can hear those brownie point racking up.

Actually it is a real easy fix.:hyper: You can do yourself :D if you purchase the Ampeg easy fix tool :eek:

Then after your done repairing your amp. You need to put it inside a custom Ampeg rack case to protect it from further damage.:)
