Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

If eq limitations on svt are an issue why not add one in front???

Like this?

DSCN1491-1.jpg

I dont think my SVT has any limitations or issue's, but all SVT-II and SVT-II pro models have built in EQ's.
(although I prefer the way mine sounds with all tone knobs set near the midpoint and rarely use the EQ)

The one(s) I was referring to, had no graphic.

There is yours, which HAS graphic

A new model is not well made- it has no graphic, a redo of the 60's beast

Then there are other models ( "Classic" that is different than the new reissue svt v , and is 300 cheaper I think! and no graphic) from this company which keeps changing- Linden, St Louis, and now I don't know where.

I guess I am wondering what, if any PA based, or Bass based ( say that 10 times ), EQ could be put in front of the non graphic svt.

Is that too much pre amplification, wiring etc? Will it mess up the native tone of the svt?

As I said before, I owned an original head. The coloration seemed limited. Probably great for certain ears, but too limiting for me.
Is EQ an answer? If so, PA eq, or bass guitar specialized eq?

Thanks mohawk.

I just got my SVT-II back from my amp tech (T/B member "timv")
I thought my amp sounded really great before, but it sounds absolutely stunning now!
He repaired serveral various problems and replaced two power-tubes with (NOS) GE's.

Thanks Tim!

PS:
Tim supplied me with lots of internal SVT-II pics as well as a scanned SVT-II schematic that I would share if anyone ever needs anything.

If you fire them my way, ill get them uploaded, may start an SVT-II appreciation site :p

Nice workbench!!!!!

Are those things tube socket extenders or something???? Be cool if you could get some loong ones and bend 'em up around the top of the chassis or something!! Good for cooling anyway!

Im pretty sure they are so you can monitor the voltage or current going through the tube. They arent just to extend it and make it look wacky. Tho, i have to admit, that would be pretty funky! (and risk your power tubes :p )

GREAT stuff Anderbass! The B 100R - 15" s Look grat too Congrats!! Glad to hear U got the SVT2 up & running IN OPTIMUM condition now!!!! Superb. I just LOVE mine. Love how the low E( or notes near it- F up to A... or even on my 5'er B up to E) Sound like an Explosion!!!! Superb- again!!!!! :-) Hit that low G etc & it literally sounds like an 'in tune "explosion" ' Gawd its GOOD!!!!!!!
Also I'd LOVE to see the pics on internal SVT2....email 'em to me if poss. or stick 'em on Your Myspace.....whatever's easy 4 U.

Thanks rod, I'll send ya some e-mail pics soon.

I'm currently trying to get all my gear working at its best.
timv also went through my V4 (its never sounded so dam good either).

When I picked up my "Pegs", I dropped off a couple more amps. He's currently doing an adjustable bias mod on my 400+ and then he's gonna tackle bringing my old blond-Bandmaster back to life.

Damn it- I almost- almost.... Wish mine came in poor condition...then I could get it fixed ;-) Nah... mine sounds SUPERB!!!! as I said- like a bomb going off when I hit the LOW notes!!! Awesome!!! My V4 does too!! I in fact noticed this 1st using the V4. Had it pretty far pushed- Master Vol on 9/10, gain on 7/10 & it was nice & loud & CLEAN on the normal notes, but would break up beautifully when I hit hard!!! :-)
Noticed THEN how it sounded like explosions on the LOW E!!!!!! Then when using the SVT2 at a good volume-Still only 4/10 :-) - it sounded huge & "explosion" like also!!!! Heaven!

Those extender things are just current monitoring sockets I made up myself. They were oriented to work for mesa's but seem to go the right direction for most amps I work on.
Anderbass's SVT II had a few of the problems that I have seen on these amps that are fairly easy to repair and modify so they aren't issues anymore. They used plug in connectors on some of the important signal and power lines that aren't exactly up to the challenge, his was the 3rd SVT II I've seen taht had issues with this. I removed the connector pins and just hard wired the wires to the circuit board. I left enough slack so the boards can still be removed. I made sure all of the updates were done, most were but a couple weren't done by whoever was in it before. Also, a plate resistor blew earlier (one of the updates gets rid of these resistors, you replace them with ferrite beads) and blew out part of the trace, this was repaired but the previous tech didn't check other parts and I found 3 blown diodes on the same power amp side, the amp was working but was biased cold and unbalanced. I rearranged the tubes to get better sets and replaced two that tested bad on my hickok 600a.
Originally I got around 250 watts clean out but after the tube swap I got 300 at various frequencies.
The schematic packet I scanned and sent to him was purchased form ampeg a few years ago, not sure if it is available anymore with the whole move but I did scan it the best I could. Some of the pages are 11x17 and my scanner only went to 11x8 1/2 so I had to scan left and right seperately and then reattach them.
Anyway........ enjoy the schematics and updates.
