Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

Today as I tested mine in the shop I turned it up all the way every knowb full up. It was below speaking level. For ~3 min I played it at that volume and then BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM It worked as "normal" level and I was out of that seat so fast I didn't know I was moving. I think the owned came close to wetting himself!

Ah good times with my soon to be best friend....

Ah, its so pretty seeing 1/2 the front page full of SVTII stuff !

oh yes it booms it booms so beautifully#

me and my drummer had one of our best sessions ever yesterday and were going back in today :hyper::hyper:

the thing is so responsive to playing dynamics. I have a nasty distortion pedal, sith SS it was on or off, but with my SVT its like if a play quiet it simmers down , if I play hardcore, its pure hardcore

amazing :bassist::bassist::bassist::bassist::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:

Congrats on the amp Pulse

I have been using my combo amp as of late because, well, I guess I have been lazy. I set up my SVT2 tonight and WOW. Everything you said about your amp is what I felt tonight.

I will be hauling back out tomorrow night for rehearsal and for the gig next weekend.

If you need schematics, let me know. I got a set from SLM before they.. well, you know :scowl:

Cheers

hey Pbass2go thanks for that! & Nice one with your amp,

I can undedrstand if one needs to move around a lot alone, a combo is a nice option.

I have carried my SVT 2 in a mimum 5 -10 Kilos flight case alone up and down 3 flights of stairs and it was very hardcore.

I mentioned in another thread, this is my HOLY rig. It is used for the most important things. Recording, serious gigs, and generally just enjoying the ripping roaring noise it makes.

I am lucky to have it stand in our band room and not have to pack it down and take it home every night alone.

thats why I consider getting a second super light head (SVT8Pro - if it works ;) )for the interim things that are less important than my main project.

all the best, and have a great gig man! :bassist:

Thanks guys, it seems I'm not the only one thats discoverd this cool switch.

I've read so many posts about S/S Ampegs not cutting through very well with
the ultra bass switch on, but this doesn't seem to be a trait of the SVT-II at all.

Hey Andersbass, thanks for the tips and influential comments that made me grab that SVTII, and to every one else that said, GET IT!!! in big capital letters and GO FOR IT!!! and BUY IT!!! when I was checking it out here!!.

I messed around with a few set ups yesterday but the best one of all was 2 x Schroeder 1212L connected at 2 ohms with Ultra Low switch engaged. The schroeders are normally mid range honkin, but that switch notches those mids down nicely and emphasises the low end perfectly.

Since the schroeders are 800 watt rms each and 12 inch, I can crank the svt a lot, and the schros dont complain. even with a distorted sub octaved bass sound.

That switch is what I use for my main sound now!

I was seriously questioning if those 1212Ls could get me my sound, but yesterday they did, and the SVTII was essential in reaching that point.

of course we are curious what it sounds like going through a 8x10 or Berg 6x10

cheers and happy playing :bassist::hyper:

just grabbed a svt II and an ampeg 8x10 off Craig's list for 500 of my parents hard earned dollars! (christmas is good when they forget your birthday).

the head is quantitties!

figured out why it was for sale; the head gets weird after about 20 minutes. the sound gets distorted and varies in volume. i think its a power tube. when i punch off the standby one of the power tubes gets a blue fog (they're mesa's). i'm young, don't know what that means, i assume it's dying.

what should i consider for replacements?
are kt88's a viable option? will the extra wattage blow a transformer? thoriated tungsten is cool! everything seems to be made by new sensor.

also, could i get a add to this group (i'm willing to be digitally hazed)

equipment
ampeg svt II
ampeg 8x10
ibanez srx400
fender p

Congrats... You got a really smokin deal on one of the finest amps ever made!

I suggest you dont assume any tubes are bad, and take it to a really good amp tech that's familiar with this particular model before powering it up again.

If you let us know where your located, someone might be able to suggest a good tech near you.

The eq on svt has always kept me away from them. I owned an orig back in the day, but traded it.

Has anyone used an eq before going into the input?
Is this a bad idea- might cause distortion, possibly.
If eq limitations on svt are an issue why not add one in front???
If yes, which ones, the studio types, or Boss, or PA types like Rane?
Thanks

reconsidering svt if I can find one that works, and with added eq
