Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

The high and low inputs only differ by a couple parts, caps and resistors so it would work as sort of a mixer. The bright input has a 100K resistor with a .0047 uF cap in parallel and the normal has a 47K resistor and thats it then they join and go to the first tube stage. The cap helps some of the highs go through without as much resistance, the bright part of it.
This isn't the same as old SVT's that have two seperate channels or a mesa 400+, etc.....
I think your amp had the other issues going on that foiled your test so I wouldn't worry about those past results....

Well, after receiving timv's blessing, I gave it another shot and my amp worked fine for over an hour of very loud usage.

Once again, I connected my bass to an A/B/Y pedals center input with its (ch-A) output connected directly to my SVT-II normal input.
The (A/B/Y) pedals channel-B output was connected through a fuzz pedal and then into the amps secondary (front-mounted) "Bright input" jack.

By foot-switching my A/Y/B pedal, I can now alternate between 3 distinctly different tones:
A = Normal input (clean only)
B = Bright input (fuzz-only)
Y = Both inputs (a clean/fuzz-bass blend)

I started out in mode B, set my distortion pedal for a medium fuzz tone and started playing, when I clicked my ABY box to run both channels simultaneously, the bright channels (fuzz-tone) remained unchanged, but I was rewarded with the distinctly-audible addition of my normal clean bass tone.

Switching back to ch-A eliminated the fuzz and brought me back to just clean.

Switching to ch-B produced the fuzz-tone, but the sound was thin and hollow, and definitely was lacking in low-bass frequency's. (at least with my fuzz-pedal and settings)

All these transitions were smooth sounding and without any sudden pops clicks or volume swings.
(note: my fuzz pedal does have a separate volume-level knob, which is a very handy feature for this particular connection scenario)

Again I only played it for a hour or so, but this amps dual-front inputs do seem to blend these two signals very well.
It sounded really great and does indeed seem to be working fine on my SVT-II now. I'm not sure how often I'll be using this arrangement but I definitely prefer it to simply installing a fuzz pedal in the normal (in-line) manner because the clean fundamental sound can still be very present even with an excessively distorted tone blended in.

I really liked it and think you guys should definitely give it a try if your unsatisfied with your prior results using distortion type pedals with this amp.

geil, I mean cool

this sounds really interesting Anders bass

I do have the problem that my crunch box does take away my juicey lows a bit.

I was always wondering what the hell the bright channel was there for since it sounded so thin, but this makes sense

think I will give it a try

still loving my svt II !!!

greets
James

This is interesting Anders. I hadn't tried the bright channel til the other day at soundcheck...& it did indeed sound BRIGHT!!! a bit too brite for my liking, but the A/B/Y fuzz idea is food for thought! will let U know when I try this. Tho I do get plenty of lows in my signal with my Green big muff.
& OF COURSE still loving MY SVT2 too!!!!!

GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

ive had my svtII 3 months now and havn't even fired it up!!!!!!!!!

i took it to my tech to fix and he was so snowed under with work he did not get round to it so im gonna do it my self

can some one take me thru step by step how to convert this thing to uk voltage?

im absolutley dying here an many of u guys a probably sick of me whining!! lol

im gonna buy a step down and fire it up 2morrow before i mod it to make sure it works

i cannot see any ferite beads on the board anywhere either... hmmm

its serial is tn2df40051

peace and love guys

hey geezers

I tried the DUAL Inputs stylee today and it rocks.

Solved a long running problem for me actually.

like I said was always losing my deepest rubling lows generated by my ebs gear when engagin the xxl

now I split after my ebs gear and then run the xxl on its own chain into bright, and the ebs into normal

keep my ebs fatness and rough up the place with the xxl on top sounds excellent and very pro.

by the was when I switch off the xxl the sound is still fine with both inputs running parallel and no muting

cool!! talk bass svt II wins again

Hey pulse, I'm glad its working out for you too. Sounds like a truly awesome setup you got going there.

I looked up all your pedals. (very nice)
I've got an old origanal Electro-Harmonics Deluxe Big muff I plan on trying out with mine after I get around to replace its damaged 110-volt power cord.

What type of splitter are you using after your 2 EBS pedals?

I haven't tried it yet, but I've been wondering if a simple Y-cord might just work out with my setup without any negative results... I've seem to of read serveral negative comments regarding the use of my Morley ABY pedal. The term "tone-sucking" seems to of come up more than once...

Hey roon, I hope this helps ya.
(Dont forget the fan motor too)

A Y cord is a dope idea, one thing less to carry around.

Right now I am using my sans amp pbddi 'tween the ebs stuff amp and xxl. I dont engage it just use its signal routing capabilities

Otherwise I have a BANZAI Splitter thats true bypass, but those are built over here in Berlin Germany.

A Y chord, if it dont suck tone, sounds like a nice option.

cheers for the comments and tips again, I think I have reached my best sound to date now,.

Hey roon, here's all I know, maybe these will help.

I hope these help you (or preferably your qualified technician), but I suggest that If you dont 100% understand how to safely and correctly convert your amp over to 230volt, take it to someone that does...
