Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

Hey rod, didn't you end up having a 230-volt fan motor instaled in yours when converting over?

Yeah, I did, after we(my tech & I) forgot to change the fan ever to 240V(he thought it'd run off the tap we already changed-apologised to me tho It was 1/2 my fault as I was rushing him a bit-anxious to get it happening!!) the fan burnt out as it was a 110v one running at 240V!! So My tech set it up so I could simply get another fan to fit-240v, tho he could've left the fan on the 110v tap( apparently there's a tap for both 110V & 240V) & i COULD've got a 110v one. If that makes sense????????:hiding:
BUT I'm def. not tech minded( soldering in new pups/pots in a bass is about MY limit :( ) so I couldn't describe how to do it. there were about 15-20 steps involved IIRC & I lost it at about 5
The new 240V fan is functioning perfectly as is the SVT2:)

Question for you guys. I posted recently about getting a tube head, and I have a sneaking suspicion that all roads point to an SVT-II. I'll also be keeping my SVP-Pro setup for a 'smaller' rig.

Anyway, the question is this: What cabs are you guys playing through? I would imagine one suggestion is an NV610, which I'd like to get at some point, but I'd also like something a bit smaller/portable, and something about a 15" rig is tempting. Anyone playing their SVT-II's through 2 1x15" (tweeterless) cabs? Seems like you could to the 2x15 thing when you needed to, and when you wanted something smaller, you could go with 1.

Hey Tim Gray, I think all roads pointing towards an SVT-II are definitely headed in the corect direction... ;)

Your two 1x15 idea is fine. I'd suggest shopping for a pair of worthy 4-ohm models for using one or both with this amp. (its rated for 2 or 4 ohm use only). I recently stumbled across a 1x15 I'm pretty happy with. Its an early-80's (4-ohm/300watt E-V equipped) HIWATT.

hi tim

I use 2 x Schroeder 1212Ls (small portable cabinets) with mine for the same reason, allthough actually I would never want to be with out both of them with the SVT II (which is a truly great amplifier), especialy since this ampeg is mostly a two man lift.(no prob in a band gig situation)

But I did often think if I later get something as a backup amp it would be more mobile (like a ampeg svt 8 pro or so) so then I could drop in on quick little gigs with one 1212L and the SVT 8 Pro and when I want to do proper mayhem take the SVT II and 2 schroeder cabs

cheers

Yeah, I'd think I'd go with both cabs for the SVT-II, but I'm going to pick up a 1 space power amp for me pre to use with just one cab.

I've heard good things about the Bag End 15" cab. I might go with 2 of those.

I gig with my SVT-II into a Marshall VBC810 cab (sealed 810), but when practicing, i far prefer the tone i get from my old Peavey 2x15 (no tweeter) :)

The SVT II was my first Ampeg head. I've since added a early 70's SVT and a '71 V4B, all played through an Ampeg SVT 15, SVT 410 HLF and the fridge. Got the head off evilbay, and it took a few visits to different techs to get it 'right' (various issues). I'm glad I stuck with it, it's a killer, versatile amp.

have you seen the SVT II P?

Nice 1 rack space pre ? from our beloved monster.

looks cool!

I am not informed enough to comment on 70s ampeg comparissons but I never saw anyone complain about the SVT II when its up and runnin

Its the best bass sound I ever had and that eq sounds amazing.

Really easy to dial good tone.

and the thing is built very well

I like the Harley Davidson comparrison above!

cheers

this thing is becoming the bane of my life!!!
ive spent $2000 on this thing in total and it still is not running at 240v!!!!!!!!!!

i tried it with a huge stepdown transformer and it sounded totaly amazing, making the problem worse for my need to get this sorted!!!!

ive taken it to a few techs with the schematics that you guys have sent and they basically say " ooooh i need more info" or sorry mate, dont want to touch it" its getting to the point where i want to pass it in coz its just taking up loadsa space!

can some point me at some one who can sort it in the uk or post the full info here and i will do it myself

cheers guys

You'll get there mate, there is a way ...

I just recently got the SVT-2 a few days ago and i love it. It's my first head other than the one I've been using which is in a cheepo ibanez combo amp. I got a great deal on it at guitar center and it sounds great, BUT there is a slight humming/buzzing with it. When i turn it on, the fan starts going and the unit makes a little noise which i expect and it doesn't bother me at all, but when i turn the standby off...a loud buzzing sound is noticeable. The buzzing volume doesn't change when i turn the volume up or down and i don't remember hearing it at guitar center, possibly because of the noise in guitar center but I'm pretty sure that i would have heard this humming. Any idea's on how to get rid of it? Or is it just something i have to deal with? Thanks

Hey Denial54, congrats on scoring an SVT-II... (welcome to our little gang)

+1 to mohawks suggestion.

Also make sure there's no room light dimmers causing your hum. My studios light dimmers can really cause some serious hum problems with both my amps and PA at certain times and then at other times not effect them at all.

You might be wise finding a really good amp-tech (thats very familiar with this particular model) to give your amp a check up anyway. Even if your amp sounds good, it may have a small problem that could get worse and more expensive to fix with time.

My Amp tech recently preformed some factory recommended upgrades to corect curtain design flaws that my 93 model had previously never received. My amp service plus these upgrades made my SVT-II sound allot better. (and I thought it sounded really great before)
