I now I recently posted a threat regarding this cab but I'm dying to know what more of you think of the new Ampeg SVT112HE. I have no opportunity to compare it to any other 112 cabs on the market but have recently aquired one of these in a trade and am debating if I am going to be keeping it or not.
Its a new model cab this year and there is very little information on the web and almost no reviews save for one here on Talkbass.
Initially, I was loving this cab as it's very deep and handles a lot of power but my ears are getting used to it and I am starting to realize that it's quite scooped sounding.
The cab is not very efficient and I'm not sure if that will effect the tone. It really isn't very loud until you crank up the rig. That sounds obvious but the cab really sounds small and choked until I turn up my rig to a point where its really loud. The cab sounds kind of choked in that the mids are very shy.
The cab does seem to wake up once it is turned up loud and can handle a ton of power without farting out. It ends up being impressively loud and deep for a 112 but at a more moderate level, I am a little disappointed in the mid scooped tone.
I have read numerous reviews on the Aggie GS112 which seems to be considered a mid scooped cab as well. I am wondering how the little Ampeg compares to the Aggie.
I'm considering buying another of these cabs to make a mini stack but want to be sure that I like the sound of them before I buy a second cab. I really like the idea of a small protable set of 112 cabs but I have no access to any other good 112 cabs on the market to demo to compare.
If anyone has tried this cab or compared it to the Agguilar GS112 I would really appreciate your comments. As I said, I wasn't looking for a 112 cab before this came along but I obtained it through a trade and want to know if this type of sound is typical of all 112 cabs or am i better off trading in this cab for something different.
I am powering the cab with an Eden Navigator and 1400w power amp. I am also using it with an SWR Workingman's 12 as an extension cabinet. It sounds much more choked and scooped than the SWR built in 12 inch speaker which has more bark but is also so much more open and full sounding.
