Luck only works when you are lucky, that's why casinos are successful They don't depend on luck, they understand very much how the statistics work and hence APPEAR lucky more often then not.
A pseudo intellectual is quite different than somebody who really knows what they are talking about. Pseudo intellectuals also depend on luck more than on their true understanding (otherwise they wouldn't be pseudo, right?)
For those trying to follow and understand why this type of interconnect in general does not work, it's because the manufacturers of these devices generally require the ring and sleeve to be connected together to work properly. Often the power switching is handled through the ring terminal and when the ring shorts to ground, the power supply circuit is completed.
It's possible for a TRS to work, but it depends on being lucky that the ring is tied to sleeve on the other end of the cable in that device's jack. The odds are much less than 50% (and they are 0% on all equipment that I have designed in the past 20 years because floating the ring offers some specific advantages with regard to being more universal (especially when combining balanced and unbalanced connections).
