Ampeg V2 cabinet

so I went to sam ash earlier today with my friend just to kill some time and I walked past an ampeg v2 cabinet that was listed for $229. I asked one of the guys working there about it and he told me its only been there for a week. After I played through it I decided to just buy it, turns out it was dropped to $199. The guy helping me almost cried cause he wanted it so bad. I have no idea if the speakers are original or not. All I really know about it is that it's from the early 70's, its a 4x12, and it sounded damn good.

Can anyone tell me more about it?

Originally it was Utah speakers. I don't think it will be safe with more than a 100watt tube head really. They did sound very good, more of a guitar cab though lots where used on bass.
Someone on here did a fab refurb job using Eminence twelves with JBL ally voice coil caps instead of the stock paper ones. Cool!:bassist:

$200 is hardly anything for a Speaker cabinet, keep in mind. :) .... Sorry, that isn't necessarily True. It's Relative. Sorry. :)

Maybe not CUT the bass... but just conservatively EQ it.
Setting it flat might just do the trick.

Just use your ears, DONT scoop your mids/turn the bass to 11, and you should be fine.


Oh? What 300 watt amp?
But your Ampeg V2 ought to do Mid's quite nicely.. It would be excellent if used in a bi-amp setting, such as with a GK amp. ... or a Sunn Coliseum 300. :)

If the guy at the shop likes it, sell it to him. Maybe he gets an employye discount on stuff and you can work a slick deal for yourself. Give him a price break of equal value to the price discount he can get on something you want.

That was JohnK's V4 cab. Might work well for the V2 cab as well though. IIRC the V2 cab is ported and taller than the square V4.

i've been hearing that bass players are using the v2 regardless of it being a guitar cab. I'm just wondering if the cab will handle the 300w my head is pushing out. The guy hooked up an SWR head and I used a jazz bass and it sounded great. But I wasn't pushing it obviously. The problem is that nobody in the world seems to know anything about these cabs.. I only find things about the head.

That seems to contradict, but the info I have (from a '73 ampeg catalog) is that it's rated at 120 watts RMS, 8 ohm would be standard speakers, 4 ohm would be with the optional Altec speakers. Not sure what the standard speakers were, it doesn't say. Would probably be ok but not great, don't crank your amp.

you have a 412 cabinet, so i would guess, that in most situations, it would get loud enough without cranking your amp.

And the golden rule of not killing you speakers: When it starts to distort then turn the volume down...

Hey,
I realize I'm about two years too late, but I have 2 ampeg
v-2's, one from the 60's, one from the 70's. I replaced the 8
original speakers with JBL's and Eminence Bass Woofers, I must say these bad boys kick, and are half the depth as regular bass cabs. I use a gk fusion 550 with a 6 string, no problem getting those open low b's projected.
As long as you switch out speakers to work with your frequency choice (guitar or bass) you will have no worries, only a massive thump to the heart!
The 4x12 has been overlooked for far too long, the 12's really bring out some bass grind....hope you're enjoying your cab, and if you ever want to sell it e-mail me!

I'm picking up a V2 (4x12) cabinet today. I'm hoping someone can suggest the best 12" speaker for it for guitar. And alternatly the best 12" speaker for bass. This will mostly always be used with my V4 head, and will probably be used more for guitar than bass. Is there a good all around speaker that my be best for both situations?
