Ampeg V4-B Question

I'm looking into buying my first head/cabinet combination and a used 1972 V4-B is currently at the top of my list. I don't know much about heads and cabinets, but how would this amp sound with a 5-string? Could it handle the low B? Maybe that's something that depends more on the cabinet, I'm not sure. And what kind of cabinet goes well with this head?

The V4B shouldn't have any trouble with a low B -- that's more of a cabinet issue.

FWIW I think my 5 stringers sounds great through my V4BH and Bag End S15-D; though an additional S15-D would probably make it sound even better.

Great amp, to me they sound best through 15's. A 215 would be great, or, a 15 combined with a 210, also great.

I'm partial to 10's and currently use a sealed 4x10 with mine. Most of the time I'm using a 4 string, but when I break out the 5 string my cab handles it well.

I'd say go with a 2x15 or a ported 6x10. You'll get a ton of bass response from these cabs and they should allow for plenty of volume from the head.

I just got a V4B and it sounds great at the low end. KILLER amp. If you use the ultra low switch you will need at least 15 to get the full range of tone out of it. I ran it though my 4X10 to start and it was great for mids but not really strong on the lows. (not the amp's fault though) I use both and it is a ridiculous tone machine.

I use either one or two single 15" cabs. I love the impedance switch!

I play a 5 string EUB through it - it's good down low.

I don't like that ultra low switch, though...it scoops low mids which is where the thing really shines.

Avatar 212 for me. They sound killer with a Mesa 215, too, if you can handle that large of a cab.
