Ampeg V4 Club

Love that setup Tom! That looks like a "later" 70s V4B - that's the model that I had.

Yes, I believe it is. I am the third owner, and I know the first two owners (local players) pretty well. The second guy is the one who sray-painted the grillcloth black to match the cab. Eh, it's not too bad.

Rockin' head, though!

Hello all. Here is a photo of my V4/SVT410e.

I want to give a tip to those of you that do not already know - the '80's SVT 410e and SVT18e were wider and less deep then the newer models (mine is an '87).

They look and sound great with a V4 - with guitar or bass.

I used the modern A.V. grill cloth and some satin black spray paint to make the grill match.

There is one on Ebay right now if you are in the Cleveland, Georgia(?) area (the seller states he/she won't ship)http://www.ebay.com/itm/180999069497?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649:.

I finally earned a number. I bought this thing today. I am thrilled. I may remove the chassis and mount it in a rack or something. The unit is HEAVY and awkward. But I think this V-series Ampeg amp is right for me. It is totally silent, no hiss no buzz. Amazing condition. I was prepared for imperfections that did not show up in the pictures, but there are none. I've seen one year old amps in much poorer condition.

Wow, that machine is pristine! Beautiful.

Very nice combo!
#64: Old Fart; Vt-22

Thank you. I am beyond thrilled. My ear has always loved tubes, and I had never played with a V-series or SVT unit. This thing is a tone monster. Wide range of amazing tone adjustments. It's got that fat, smooth, punchy thing goin' on. And it growls too, if I want. The speakers start to flab out at higher volumes, but I just need to get this into a head configuration and get a cabinet with bass speakers. A 2x15. I doubt I will ever be without one or more tube Ampegs. Ever.

Hot News Flash!!! You guys should check out these old V-series Ampeg amps. Amazing tone and power and quality. Just sayin'. In case you haven't noticed.

I think I might just add a 1x15. In fact, I think I will wire the speaker in my BA-115HPT so that I can use it as a slave cabinet.

I've got a question, and hopefully this is the right thread. This VT-22 is a blast, but I think the 12" guitar speakers are not really up to the task. At least, not by themselves. I had a rehearsal today, and it performed wonderfully tone-wise. I am only running about half volume, and I think the speakers tend to flab out a little, particularly with the lowest notes. I don't want to crank it and damage the speaks. Am I right? Does this amp have too much power to be playing bass through the 2x12's?

As i mentioned above, I am thinking of wiring my BA-115HPT so that I can use it as an extension cabinet. That may solve the problem. Next step might be to put a pair of 12" bass speakers in the combo, plus the Eminence that (I think) is in my BA-115HPT. After that, the next step would be to build a head box and just get a good 2x15.

Comments? Observations?

Yeah the guitar speakers won't last long in that cab at full volume. Ditto for any bass speakers you put in there since it's an open back cab. I could get some sort of alternate cab going as soon as you can. How are the internal speakers connected? Are they hardwired or is it a plug-in jack type connection?

The speakers are wired using what I call "spade" connectors. Flat, about 1/4" wide.

So.....even bass speakers would be in peril? Because of the open back?

I should know this but the old V4 cabs with the 12" Eminence drivers are more guitar cabs right? Not bass?

Yes, You are correct sir. However, there are a few Guys around here, who have reloaded them with more "Bass guitar friendly" speakers, and had pretty good luck. Some have even used Eminence neo's like the 2512, and the S2012, which will help lighten the cab up a bit.
