Ampeg V4 Club

There is also the V6B which was closer to the newer SVT 215 than either of the others. It was front firing like the B25 with a center port IIRC and looked more like the V4 in that it was deep instead of wide (though not as deep as the V4, those things were massive).

Hey, dudes! I'm brand spanking new to TB. Well, been a lurker for a while just to get good reviews and advice. But I just wanted to say, hey, and to get in on this V4/V4B club action! I just bought my first one last night. And she's a beauty!

Someone retolexed her in tweed, which I kinda think is awesome. That's what really sold me on it. And she sounds scrumptious through my Willis 6x10.

#61: CoopNasty; V4B Nice tweed!

Aaaah... finally got my '71 baby back from a not-so-fast tech. Quickly connected to the odd SWR 15" at the rehearsal studio... Man! I missed her. Me and the band got our sound back. First time I heard a V-4B through a 15", too - always having used an SVT 810. Not bad at all! Makes me think again of my old wish of an Ampeg 2x15 cab. Reread a few threads mentioning these cabs. Do I understand it correctly that there was another closed 2x15 cab in Ampeg history besides the original V-4B cab? So far, I only know Fliptops make 'em new these days.

Ampeg also made the B-25B at about the same time, which is a more conventional cab than the V-4B. More recently, ampeg has released the SVT-215E.

What is the power handling capability on the B-25B?

And how would you tell if the drivers in one are original? Do they have square magnets like the 810s?
Pretty sure they do...likely CTS's. As for power handling, not great, but you could replace them with Eminence Beta or Delta 15's and get about 400-450w in it.

I'm just wondering if the stock drivers would handle the full output from an old (my new) SVT. I'd really like to find an 810 flatback (and, yes, I know they are only rated for 200W). But, I know where there's a B-25B for a good price, so was considering buying it to try.

I'll try to take some pictures of mine. I pulled them out of my cabinet and replaced them with JBL E-140's. I think the original speakers are only rated at 30 watts or something like that - they sound great though.

No way they'd handle it. Turn up an SVT to distortion and it can go WAAAAAAAY over 300w. I believe it'll be 700w peak.

My '72 SVT had the stock speakers farting out in no time. I think you could very easily blow out the original speakers with an SVT if you're not careful.

How does the B25-B sound compared to an 810 flatback? Is the B25-B sealed? The pic I was just looking at looked like it had a couple of small ports to one side, between the two drivers.

Pardon the mess

Can't compare it to an ampeg flatback unfortuntely - never had the pleasure. The B25B cabinet is a great sounding cabinet though. It does have a small port.

Ha ha! Cool. So those are ports. Looks cool.

I may have to go try out the one near me. My V4 hanging off both sides of my Berg 610 never bothered me. But, when I put my new (to me) SVT on top of the 610 last night, my g/f immediately commented on how much better it looks because it doesn't hang off. So, a cab that the V4 (and my Traynor YBA-3) could run into and look "right" at the same time, might be worth picking up for the right price. :D

If I ever see one available, I will definitely check it out. But, I don't know that I've ever seen one for sale. At least, not anywhere near me.

Is the Big B a special type of YC810? Or are all YC810 cabs a Big B?

Wow! More than 2 pages of great posts in a short night's sleep - thanks, guys! I'll keep my eyes open for a good old B25B cab then (never seen one for sale, though).

Check the classifieds. I think there's one for sale right now (not affiliated with the seller; just trying to be helpful).

I love the B25B cabinet. Sounds great with V4B's.
