Ampeg V4 Club

I'm certainly no pro. But the CL seems to have a lot of push in the super low end and super high end. At least in comparison to the V4. I have neither the low now hi engaged on the CL. I'm not saying it sucks, just comparing and contrasting.

Here's what I'm playing with this weekend. Have a 80's Japanese SVT delivering next Wed which I'm actually hopeful win the top crown as the keeper.
My wife likes the newer CL though her comment was "they're not so much different". I like the V4 at solo-in-the-garage environment.
Wish I was rich enough to stock pile awesome gear like this just to have it around. Alas I can only float it for a few weeks and have to sell to reduce the pile to something more reasonable for a weekend warrior to own.
And so my wife has someplace to park her car. heh.

MTI SVT's are sweet. They get a bad rap but I don't know why. And you're lucky to have a wife who cares enough to have an opinion. My wife always says, "Sounds great, honey!"

Don't get the wrong idea. While my wife is an avid music and art lover she only bothered to spend 45 seconds listened to me A-B the amps because she was walking through the garage to park her bike after a ride. I got "that ones louder" "that one has more fuzz" and "they're not that much different" before I finally got "my ears are starting to hurt" and she left. I'll haul them both to practice tomorrow and see if the bandies will entertain me A-B'ing them, and maybe get some recordings.

it took a MASSIVE folded horn for mine to appreciate the V2. followed by a volume tap out.

1) Do your V4 amps make an audible dull pop then decaying hum noise when switching from ON > STANDBY with nothing plugged into the input?
2) What about when powering from STANDBY > ON? I get a brief old tube TV type sound, then a really low volume hum which is often typical with the older amps. I haven't bothered to play with the hum control.
With these old tube amps I'm never sure what's normal and what's a potential problem. But going in or out of standby, or powering off with full tube amps always seems to have some potential to make noise out of the speaker output and/or built-in DI if there is one.

Mine doesn't do any of that. It's quiet all the time, unless I'm playing through it.

Sounds like you might need a cap job.
Can you guys help recommend me a cab for my v4b or help make some comparisons for me? (Glad Tom is in this thread!) Im currently using an avatar 212 neo. Was considering going with two efficient single 15's since I may be moving into an apt it'd be nice to be able to only use one for practice, or a 215. After seeing some of the resto jobs of matching v4 and b40 cabs though I'm kind of jonesing for that. My budget isn't too high, maybe $1000 max. Would like the head to sit flush on it or close to so a 26" to 27" wide cab. Been looking at fliptops.net and LDS as well. Cool stuff. Any suggestions?

Fliptops make great cabs, if you don't want to go for vintage stuff. But 12, 15 or 10" make a lot of difference. I'm guess you're going to get lots of advice featuring people's favorite cabs, but I'd say the best thing you can do if you want to get something you're going to like and if you're willing to spend some serious money, is take your time and try out as many cabs with your amp and tour bass as you can: 4x12, 2x15, 1x15, 4x10 and 8x10 for starters. The research is fun and worthwhile. Try new and old cabs as well, if at all possible. I'm sure TB folk in your area will be happy to help you out. Your own ears and taste just are the most important instruments here...!
