Ampeg V4 Club

birdman14, I actually sold the black faced V4b a couple months ago. The 8x10 is in need of repair. I usually use 1 head full range, but I am going to try the V4B and 1 Hartke 4x10 for lows and the other Hartke 4x10 with the 350H for mids and highs. What do ya think of that plan?

I think the worst you could do is try it and see how good it is. I haven't had a chance to try the 350H, and personally I prefer to run things oldschool w/o doing full range things, but if it works, more power to you.

The 2 Hartke's sound sweet with the V4b at full range. Really no need to piss around with 2 heads. The 350H is not as warm and smooth as the V4b. I bring both heads to gigs in case one goes down. The money I got from selling one of the v4's went into the other for a complete overhaul. Just like new now. Lovin' it!

Alright folks, rolled the dice and picked this up on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251149328630?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Obviously I have to figure out something regarding a head cabinet. Bruce doesn't have any in stock and said it may be a week or two before he has any available. Plus, that's $200+ dollars that I don't have to spare right now.

Anyone have a resource that has schematics on how the chassis of these amps are mounted into the head cabinet? I'm not worried about building the box itself, but I can't remember the specifics on the chassis mounts on the sides of the box or how the shockmounts work into the mix. I've searched the gallery at ampegv4.com as well as the forum but didn't really see anything that helped. I would really appreciate any info!

Nice score Patrick! Hey my amp tech has several V4/V4b heads in his stash. I'm pretty sure he told me he's parted at least one of them out for components he replaced/installed on my 72 V4. Maybe he'd sell you the original headcase from that amp...

He's a forum member you could totally trust buying on-line from, his talkbass forum name is timv. Here's a link to his profile page with contact info: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/member.php?find=lastposter&t=553413

Tried my V4 out quickly last night in the practice room. Tons of volume, tons of super tight and articulate low end with almost too much bass. Seriously the low end was monstrous even with bass at noon. Jury Is out on overall volume before breakup and the guitarist is standoffish about no DI but I have a PR40 for micing the cab. Dunno why people has such a narrow focus on DI for bass. Should be a fun experiment. :)

The interesting thing is it appears to have the original power tubes. 40 years old. Guitarist commented "that's nothing to be proud of" I say we shall see. :p

I use the two 2-10 micro cab with my B2RE. Nice sound.

I have a mid to late 70's V4B that I bought here on the classifieds. All USA tubes (put some early GT 7027's in it from eBay direct from Aspen - believe they are sylvanias?). Play through a custom LDS 1x15 that matches the head cosmetically as well as the width.
Play a 70 P through it with .109 Labella DTF's.

Tone city! I have been gas free amp wise since I bought it in 2009. Had a '73 SVT, and I prefer the V4B for what I do.

The preamp out (Ext Amp I think they label it) on these works fine going into a board, or that into a regular DI to switch to a XLR cable if the distance is more than 20 ft. I do it often, even for recording. And mic'ing this amp can be great. I use either a Shure SM57 or a AKG D112. Both are fine.

I like to use something like the countryman to really capture the power section of the amp as well. Get the full tone, so to speak.

I bet that is one great sounding rig. V4B, 15" speakers, and a p, what more in life do you need?

How much wiggle does your V4 amp have inside the chassis? Mine moves slightly when plugging in cables, and of course floats around in there while hauling it. Just curious if my shock absorber rubber needs replacing, related screws tightened, or if that's simply how it's supposed to be. It seems like a fairly clever mounting system, though maybe it sucks and that's why I've never seen an integrated shock mount system before. :p

I have 1995 USA SVT CL here to compare with into a newer 2007 Vietnam 810 cab and I honestly prefer the sound of the V4. It seems to have a sweeter high end, and much tighter and more focused low end, and just generally fuller sounding, and way better overdrive qualities when digging in. The CL has a ton more high end I cannot quite tame which emphasis fret clank, sounds less full, and with a boomy low end. This is solo testing in my garage.
