Ampeg V4 Club

I think it's safe to assume they're the same freqs. I know for a fact the bass is. The treble, ultra-hi and ultra-low sound identical to me, too. No idea about the Q but I have to assume it covers the same ranges the old ones did. But I can't remember the freqs offhand and I'm too lazy to look them up. There is a V4 website that should have all that info... www.ampegv4.com .

Na, no luck on ampegv4.com. I searched the forum, but no success. Only thing I found was this old TB thread: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/ampeg-eq-598171/ - but again no luck there.

Mids are 300/1K/3K on both. The schematics show the circuits are basically identical (V4, V4B). The V4B has larger caps on the input gain that allow for a lower cutoff at the input so you'll have a deeper tone to start with, and the V4B has the ultra low boost instead of the sensitivity, but otherwise the resistors and such around the circuits are all the same. A few pictures I found via google image search show the same values on the V4B faceplates ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed], 2) as the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. The manuals available on ampegV4.com indicate the mid range control is either 300/1K/3K or 300/800/2.5K but doesn't say which amps have what. The service manual I have for the V4 says the bass and treble controls operate at 40 and 4K, probably the same on the V4B as well.

I was asking about differences between original and reissue of the V-4B. Sorry, if that wasn't clear from the posting. But it seems both are similar frequency-wise.

But what I'd really like to know is, what is the bandwidth (or Q factor) for the EQ section of the new or old V-4B, like for bass, mid, treble, ultra lo and ultra hi :confused:

Sorry, usually the question is between the V4 and V4B. Anyways, the answer is the same. On the vintage amps the frequency centers are 40 Hz for bass, 300/1K/3K for mids, and 4K for treble. The ultra high is a cut/boost at 8K, the ultra low is a cut at 40 in the (-) position, a cut in the low mids (~5-600Hz) in the (+) position. On the reissue they're as you posted earlier. Pretty comparable overall.
 
Can I join? I purchased this v4b in 1996 for $200. It's been my main amp since. I run it with 2 410he cabs.

This amp was nearly stock when I got it. Missing two screws on the chassis, missing a nut on one of the jacks, and had non-sylvania/ampeg tubes, otherwise it was pretty much how it came from the factory. New electrolytics and power resistors, a few other caps (replaced those big, gross looking .47 uf caps), new power light, a handful of out of spec resistors, some other coupling caps, plate and screen resistors, replaced the 12AX7 that was residing in V3 with a proper 12DW7, etc. After a few weeks of play I got a nice pop and then weird sputtering. One of the nice RCA 7027s that were in this amp decided to take a dive. A new set of sovtek 7027s and we're back in business.

I ended up adding in the grid stopper resistors that are shown on the schematic with the "*may not be placed" tag as I was picking up a ton of radio noise with this amp. I went with 1K as the schematic calls for at first and it killed most of the noise, but there was still a little bit. Just upped them to 56K, so we'll see how that goes at rehearsal on saturday.
 
You know the trick of leaving the rear panel on when tinkering with a V4 - it took me a while to figure that one out;)

The first time I had it out it was just balancing and I was like, okay, this might work. Then it fell over. So I'm trying to get the thing back into the headbox when I thought it might be easier if the back panel was on. Then it hit me that's how you're supposed to do it. Definitely a "what didn't I think of this sooner" moment ;)

I went through a similar process. At one point I even cut a couple of blocks to rest it on - when I realized all I had to do was leave the rear panel on, I felt like a dope.:rolleyes:
